The One Show host Alex Jones has revealed the real reason she split up with her famous ex Steve Jones.

The Welsh broadcasters were in a relationship from 1999 to 2002 when they both worked on Channel 4 show Rise.

At the time Alex was the show’s Entertainment Correspondent – and the opportunity to interview Hollywood A-lister Angelina Jolie came in.

But instead of telling Alex about the once-in-a-lifetime offer, she claims Steve pretended she was ill so he could steal her moment and do the interview himself.

Alex made the confession when she appeared as a guest on the Dish podcast with hosts Nick Grimshaw and Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett.

Steve and Alex were together for three years in the Noughties

In an upcoming episode of the podcast, she tells the duo: “Normally [Rise] would call in the morning and ask to come and do an interview or junket.

“I was staying in his [Steve’s] flat at the time when I was working in London and he picked up the landline and said ‘Al’s not here. She’s not feeling well, she’s had to go back to Cardiff’ – I was in Topshop.”

“So he did the interview,” Alex claims in the podcast preview obtained by MailOnline.

The Mirror has contacted reps for Steve Jones for comment on this story.

Angelina Jolie was inadvertently the cause of Steve and Alex's split

Shortly after Steve interviewed Angelina, he went on to land one of his biggest gigs at the time as a presenter on iconic hangover TV show, T4.

But when Rise producers discovered what Steve had done, they decided to have a bit of fun with it.

Alex previously told the Thanks A Million with Angela Scanlon podcast that Steve’s betrayal was the real reason they broke up.

Explaining how she got her revenge, Alex shared: “So I got back to the flat and was like, where is he? Hours went past, nobody answering their phones. In the end I thought, right I’m going to drive back to Cardiff because I don’t know where you are, you’ve probably gone to the pub.

“Then the production company called and they were like, ‘We’ve got a bit of a situation.

"Tomorrow morning your boyfriend is going to the premiere with Angelina Jolie and it would be really funny if you came on the line, live on the show and surprise him and say you know exactly what he’s been up to.

“So I said yes. On live telly I’m like, ‘You lied to me, where have you been?’ So yeah, not surprisingly, we split up on live telly!”

Alex has gone on to find love with insurance broker Charlie Thomson, who she has been married to since 2015.

The 46-year-old, now best known for presenting The One Show, is also mum to three children – Teddy, five, Kit, three, and one-year-old Annie.

Her former model ex Steve, also 46, now splits his time between London and Los Angeles after landing a huge presenting gig on The X Factor USA.

It was while working on The X Factor that he met his now wife Phylicia Jackson-Jones, who he married in 2014.

Steve says his marriage is his 'best achievement' so far

Now a regular presenter for Formula One, former ladies’ man Steve says his marriage is his “greatest achievement” so far.

It’s a far cry from Steve’s hell-raising days in the early 2000s, hosting Channel 4’s T4, when women were putty in his hands.

He made singer Kylie Minogue blush when he got down on one knee 12 years ago, as she took over presenting a T4 Weekend.

Steve also dated Hollywood stars, including Baywatch’s Pamela Anderson and Heroes star Hayden Panettiere. Closer to home he won the hearts of TV presenters Fearne Cotton, as well as the late Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding .
