The 'Rebel County' is located in the south-west of Ireland in the province of Munster. It borders four other counties – Kerry, Limerick, South Tipperary and Waterford. Cork is largest county in Ireland by land area and in 2011 had a population of 519,032 - the second biggest in the country. While its rebel nickname has 15th Century origins, it has been more commonly attributed to the prominent role Cork played in the Irish War of Independence (1919–1921).
