A chain of butcher shops in Dublin is chopping prices and selling meat at 1973 prices to mark 50 years in business.

Kerrigan’s Craft Butchers will also offer customers a chance to sample long-forgotten cuts of meat that were popular in the 1970s, such as offal, collar bacon, and rolled ribs of beef, as they wind back the clock next weekend.

Dublin Live reports that the well-known butchers, who have outlets in Donaghmede, Malahide, Northern Cross and Stepaside, will revert to prices charged under the old imperial system from October 27 to 29.

Sirloin steak, which usually retails for €20 per kilo, will go on sale for just €8.37 per kilo; while the price change will see sausages offered for just €2.79 per kilo, and pork chops on the bone will cost just €6.97 per kilo.

Chicken fillets will be priced at just €1 each as the butcher shops travel back in time to 1973, and mince will be available for €2.79 per kilo.

Shoppers will also be offered the chance to take a trip down memory lane by sampling cuts of meat that were popular in the 1970s but have since disappeared from butcher shop windows.

“Our customers are the heart of our business, so it’s important we could do something to give back to the community here,” said managing director of Kerrigan’s Craft Butchers, Shane Kerrigan.

“We’re all incredibly proud of the journey we’ve undertaken together and the legacy we continue to protect.

“My father started this business in 1973 when he opened our first store in Donaghmede. We now have five physical stores and a thriving online business that fulfils hundreds of orders week-on-week across the island of Ireland and the UK. We’ve listened to our customers to understand what changes we’ve needed to make to meet their needs and demands,” he added.
