Every household in Ireland will get €450 off their electricity bills in the coming months in a bid to help with the cost of living crisis.

The energy credits, announced in Budget 2024, will be made in three instalments of €150 each. The first is due within weeks, with another in January and a final one in March.

Around 2.25 million account holders will benefit from the ‘Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme III’, with the money due to be deducted from bills automatically. Households do not need to apply for it.

Three similar energy credits have already been paid since 2022. The first was paid between November 1 and December 31, 2022, the second between January 1 and February 28, 2023 and the third between March 1, 2023 and April 30, 2023.

A Government spokesperson said: "It was announced in Budget 2024 that all domestic electricity customers will get €450 off their electricity bills. The energy credit will be paid in 3 instalments of €150. The first payment will be made in December 2023, the second in January 2024 and the third in March 2024."

Who is eligible?

Anyone who holds a household electricity account can get the payment, including pay as you go customers. The scheme will not be means tested.

How to apply

As with previous energy credits, you will not need to do anything. Households do not need to apply for the payment and account holders will see the money automatically taken off their bill.

When will the payment be made?

The Government has not given an exact date, but said that €150 off will appear on bills in December 2023, January 2024 and March 2024.

Like the previous payments, it is expected that a credit line item will appear on bills. It previously had the identifier ‘Government Electricity Credit’ or an abbreviated version of this.

How much money will I get?

€150 is the amount consumers will see as a credit line item on their bills. Each domestic electricity account holder will get the benefit of the VAT inclusive amount which is €150, and will be paid three times in the coming months.
