Celebrities have been rocking red socks as part of their camp uniform since I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! began way back in 2002.

This year a whole host of new faces will be getting into the familiar get-up for the 23rd series of the hit ITV show. Britney Spears' sister Jamie-Lynn, TV personality Sam Thompson, This Morning's Josie Gibson, First Dates' Fred Sirieix, YouTuber Nella Rose, former politician Nigel Farage, food critic Grace Dent, JLS star Marvin Humes, EastEnders legend Danielle Harold, Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard are heading into the jungle on Sunday, November 19.

They'll slip into the classic I'm A Celeb attire, finished with the traditional red accents we've learned to love over the years. One main part of the 'uniform' is the iconic red socks, but there's actually a disturbing reason behind the clothing item.

Former show medic Bob McCarron, who left the ITV programme after 20 years last year, recently opened up about the production wardrobe choices. He revealed the red socks were given to celebrities to "disguise bloodstains".

He told Woman's Own magazine that the famous faces will likely be bitten by bugs, including leeches, and will likely have blood marks on their feet and legs. So ITV bosses hope to disguise the injuries using the iconic red footwear.

Bob also previously revealed other health issues campmates face, telling I'm A Celeb's spin-off Extra Camp: "Most people think of fungus as mushrooms but we have problems with the cast every year – especially women growing fungus on certain body parts [breasts]. I've been instructing them to use the shower and personal hygiene a little bit more often."

Ahead of the show on Sunday, the 10 stars have been speaking about their hopes for the new series. "There is literally every misconception you can have on a person about me so I don’t take any of it seriously. But I do think going on I’m A Celebrity will be a nice way for people to see the real me. This is an opportunity to be myself and do something really cool and have some awesome experiences in the meantime," Jamie-Lynn said of joining the show.

Josie admits her anxiety is at an all time high now she's headed to Australia. She explained: "Now I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! is fast approaching, it’s sinking in and I am feeling anxious. I keep thinking, ‘S**t, I am actually doing this’. I know I have taken on challenges for This Morning in the past but I don’t know if I’ve taken on too much here. It’s all becoming very real."

Nigel Farage is heading into the jungle in an attempt to salvage his shattered reputation. "Given millions hate me, I do expect people will vote for me to do trials! My crime was to stand against an establishment view and I was for many years the lone voice saying Europe wasn’t where we should be, so I have been a little bit demonised," he said.

"I am hoping those who hate me might hate me a little bit less afterwards. But it’s a gamble. And the idea that somehow the things I represent -mean-spirited, small-minded, nasty, the ‘little Englander’ - all those accusations that have been flung at me over the years just aren’t true. If we can dispel some of those misconceptions, then that will be a good thing too."
