This year, celebrate the holidays Parisian-style with a stay at elegant La Place Dauphine, a 17th-century residence transformed into luxurious and comfortable vacation rentals. With six of the apartments located in one historic building, and two more properties available nearby, there’s plenty of space for your family and friends to gather together with the added convenience of fully-equipped kitchens and beautiful private spaces to relax. Here are a few of our favorite things that make La Place Dauphine the perfect place to stay this holiday and winter season!

1. Enjoy Christmas Charm Parisian-Style

Located on the Île de la Cité island in the Seine, the charming Place Dauphine is the most central location for enjoying Paris. Not only are you right in the heart of the city, but you’re just a short stroll away from sights and shopping on both the Right and Left Banks. The historic Place Dauphine is decorated beautifully for the holidays. But just cross over to the Right Bank to find an “Enchanted Forest” in front of the Hôtel de Ville. Complete with light displays, a merry-go-round, and a cute winter market, this is festive spot from December 3-January 2.

Across the Seine on the Left Bank is the lovely little Marché de Noël Paris Notre Dame, a Christmas market in Square Vivani (near Shakespeare & Company bookstore – another great holiday shopping spot to support this iconic independent bookstore!) with artisan sellers from December 9-26.

Of course, you won’t want to miss a stroll down the Champs-Élysées to see the Christmas lights and a visit to the Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, which is the biggest in Paris.

Some of our favorite Reveillon options include Les Fous de l’Île on the Île Saint Louis (65€/pp). Check out some of our favorite restaurants in the 7th, near many of our rentals, for their holiday menus.

For a truly spectacular holiday dining experience, make a reservation at Ducasse sur Seine, a river cruise boat that allows you to view all the sights of the city while enjoying a menu created by Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse. On Christmas Eve, you’ll be served a six-course dinner with wine pairings, while watching the lights of the city dance on the water.

Holiday Events

For some holiday deliciousness from the mind of newly-appointed world’s best patissier François Perret, the Ritz is setting up a Christmas chalet in front of the hotel on Place Vendôme. Between 7 December and 5 January, come taste the hotel’s signature hot chocolate, traditional Christmas gingerbread and Perret’s own twist on apfelstrudel in the setting of the picturesque Place Vendôme and its gorgeous Christmas trees.

If you’re more into holiday music, why not pick up tickets to a candlelit concert? Choose Bach or Chopin on the 16th and 17th of December, respectively, at the American Cathedral; listen to the Republican Guard Band play holiday classics at the Theatre du Champs-Elysées on 20-21 December; or attend one of the free concerts at the beautiful Madeleine church on the 14th or 18th of December.

Gift Giving

Christmas markets abound in the French capital throughout the holiday season, and each year brings more artisanal and themed markets, particularly with local producers. They’re the perfect places to find unique gifts for everyone on your holiday list. We love the ones in Saint-Germain-des-Près (Place Saint-Germain-des-Près, 30 November 2019 to 5 January 2020), next to Notre Dame (Square Viviani, 13-29 December), the Alsatian market at Gare de l’Est (4-20 December) and the local producer markets at the Marché Popincourt (7-8 December) and Le Hasard Ludique (1,8,15 December)

If you won’t be around for or can’t make the dates of some of the Christmas markets, you can find gifts from small brands and creators at la Fabrique du Père Noel, located right near the BHV department store. The annual pop-up hosts at least 40 different brands at a time and they rotate every Thursday to keep things fresh. It’s open daily until Christmas Eve at 14 rue Saint Croix de la Bretonnerie.

Winter Activities

There are plenty of winter activities around Paris to enjoy during the holiday season. Searching for fun for all ages? The Parc de la Villette is hosting the city’s largest funfair, with all kinds of rides and carousels, from 7 December 2019 to 4 January 2020. It’s a bit out of center, so it’ll feel like you’re getting away from the city for an afternoon or evening, and is the perfect place to bring the kids.

The annual illuminations are back at the Jardin des Plantes from 18 November 2019- 19 January 2020. Wander through the garden and enjoy the brightly lit sea creatures- this year’s exhibition is themed “Océan en voie d’Illumination.” Children and adults alike will enjoy the octopi, whales, crabs, and other sea creatures and birds.

If you’re looking for ways to keep moving despite the cold, there are a number of places to go ice skating. This year, the Grand Palais becomes the country’s largest indoor ice rink once again from 13 December to 8 January; head there in the day to enjoy with little ones, and in the evenings for a club-like atmosphere, complete with a DJ and light shows. The hotel Plaza Athénée has also brought back their courtyard ice skating rink, which is included in the price of their festive teatime (or hot chocolate) in the hotel’s beautiful Galerie. The newcomer on the scene this year is Galeries Lafayette, who have installed an ice rink on their rooftop which is free to the public- including skate rentals!

Doni Belau of the Girls’ Guide to Paris has been a friend to Paris Perfect for quite some time and has worked closely with a number of the key people in the company. Christmas Tour of Alsace

The best trips and tours are planned and scheduled far in advance, and the Girls’ Guide to Paris’ Christmas Markets tour in Alsace is no different. The Alsace region comes alive and shows its truly magical side at the beginning of December when the Christmas markets open in Strasbourg, Colmar and in all the darling little villages in between.

"Christmas

Alsace is also famous for its myriad of delicious white wines, such as the well-known Reislings and Pinot Gris and the lesser known but scrumptious Gewurtztraminer and Crémant (read: sparkling wine). Alsatian foods are in a category of their own. The tarte flambée, which is an Alsatian pizza, is thin and tasty. The chocroûte is a must-try, as is bäckeoffe, a hearty casserole dish. Kugelhopf is their delectable bundt cake. Plus, you’ll enjoy pretzels and vin chaud (mulled wine), while walking the streets and shopping the markets.

"Christmas

GG2P’s tour combines northern Alsace, with a stay in charming Strasbourg and the lesser-known southern Alsace area, which abuts the picturesque Vosges Mountains. The colorful half-timbered houses, which are indicative of the area, come alive in the Christmas season. Lights twinkle and every home with a window box is decorated for the holiday in high style. There is a myriad of Plus Beaux Village de France (most beautiful villages in France) in this region, many of which you’ll be visiting. You’ll gush when you stroll through the cobblestone streets of Riquewihr, Eguisheim and Kayserberg.

You’ll also have a chance to visit a cheese farm in the mountains, take a regional cooking class, eat at a pop-up restaurant, visit a hilltop castle, take a street art tour and learn about the special Christmas fabric that the town of Mullhouse creates yearly.

"Christmas

One of the best days will be spent at the Eco-Museum, which is nothing like it sounds. The creator of this outdoor museum has collected authentic antique homes, barns and other buildings from throughout Alsace and moved them to one spot to create a village, which is decorated with fresh greenery for Christmas. We saw Père Noël drive by in his horse drawn carriage on our last trip. While visiting the village, you’ll watch people creating all types of Christmas specialties, stews and mulled wine, as well as crafts.

The only problem with the GG2P Christmas Market tour is you’ll need a separate suitcase to transport all the unique, hand-crafted items purchased at the markets! But we have a plan for that too! Each market is different and unique. Some specialize in regional foods and gourmet items, special Christmas cookies, beers and ciders, while others focus on handmade crafts, knitwear, gift items, as well as a gigantic choice of charming items you can decorate your abode with back home.

Christmas in France is every Francophile’s dream. The food, the lights, the traditions–it’s easy to understand why they call it the most wonderful time of the year. But we’re going to let you in on a little secret: you can recreate these French Christmas traditions right at home. Here is our list of seven French Christmas traditions to adopt, from the most traditional to their most modern incarnations, to be celebrated whether in your Paris Perfect apartment or your own home.

"7

Crèche

Other Christmas decor is negotiable (and becoming more and more popular), but one thing every French home has at Christmastime is the crèche, or Nativity scene. These aren’t your average church nativity scenes. Many feature entire villages aside from the traditional manger scene, particularly in Provence where there are many stands at each Christmas market selling the little figurines.

"7

Calendrier d’Avent

Advent calendars are a big deal in France. Children eagerly await the 1st of December to open the first door, usually because there are chocolate or candy treats hiding behind it. Many larger companies have also adopted the Advent calendar idea for adults, filling the boxes with everything from skincare products to candles, and they’ve become a popular gift to give at the beginning of the holiday season.

"Marche

Marché de Noel

The marchés de Noel, or Christmas markets, are an important part of the French Christmas tradition. Beginning usually the last weekend of November and continuing until Christmas Day or into the New Year, little wooden stalls pop up in the center of villages and cities all over the country. Not only can you buy festive treats and decorations here, you can often find smaller producers selling their high-quality goods in holiday packaging. The most popular are in the Alsace region. There are seven markets in the city of Strasbourg alone! Each market and city has its own distinctive flair, giving you the chance to buy regional goods. If you’re looking to recreate the idea behind the Christmas markets at home, seek out small businesses and local artisans for gifts that are both unique and good for the community.

Réveillon vs Christmas Day

If you’re looking to pull out all the stops for a French Christmas dinner, make sure you’re doing it on the right day! The biggest meal of the holiday is usually eaten on Christmas Eve, known as le Réveillon, instead of on Christmas Day. The starters often consist of foie gras, oysters, or escargots, followed by a bird–often a capon or turkey–and finishing with the bûche de Noël, or Yule log, as well as other treats like chocolates and nougat. All washed down with wine, it’s a wonder the French ever make it to midnight Mass afterward.

"7

Midnight Mass

While in places like the United States you’ll find most churches packed to the brim on Christmas morning, in France those who do choose to go to church will go to the midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Many churches will have a small reception afterward, and it’s a convivial moment between the people of the church community before returning home, either to sleep (for those without kids) or open presents (for those with impatient little ones).

"7

Bûche de Noel

The Yule log, or bûche de Noël, has come a long way since its origins as the literal log families would burn on Christmas to bring good luck in the new year. The current incarnations are like a seriously fancy Swiss Cake roll, and the master pâtissiers (pastry makers) in Paris are often incredibly creative with each new iteration. It’s the perfect festive Christmas dessert!

"7

Fête des Rois

The official end of the Christmas season is the Fête des Rois, or the Three Kings’ Day (Epiphany to US folks), and is celebrated here with the galette des rois, or king cake. It’s a flaky pastry generally filled with frangipan (an almond cream), and hidden inside is a fève (tiny baby figurine). Whoever gets the piece with the fève gets to be the king or queen for the day. Literally most bakeries sell the cakes with a paper crown. While in the US this tradition is more typical of Mardi Gras, why not start the party a little early this year?

If you’re looking to live out these traditions by spending the holidays in Paris, check out our most family friendly Paris Perfect apartments! Each has 2-4 bedrooms, meaning everyone can sleep in comfort and be well rested to open gifts on Christmas morning (or sleep well after the excitement, if you open gifts at midnight like the French).

On a recent wintery Saturday, my sister Lisa and I enjoyed a brisk 4-mile walk from the Eiffel Tower, along the Seine, to our destination, La Place Dauphine to put up some Christmas decorations.

It was one of the coldest days of this holiday season, but we took off some of the winter chill by stopping along the way at one of my favorite crepe stands, for a bite and some mulled wine.

On the way back we stopped at the upscale Bon Marche department store at Sevres Babylon. It was sparkling for the holidays and bustling with shoppers who were marveling at the interesting artisans from throughout France that had been invited to display their work, from graffiti artists customizing sneakers to talented jewelry makers.

Suddenly, there was loud classical music and the crowds stopped to marvel at a vision of sugar plum ducks descending the escalator, unlike any Nutcracker performance we’ve ever seen. It was a magical end to a perfect Saturday.
