Granola

When my daughter first introduced me to Purely Elizabeth’s granola, I was instantly hooked. With its blend of oats, quinoa, amaranth (a seed I had never even heard of before), nuts and berries, it was wholesome, crunchy and delicious. But here in Paris, it isn’t something you can easily find in the shops. That’s when I decided to create my own version, bringing together the best of those ingredients with a few personal touches.

After a bit of experimenting, I came up with a recipe that’s become a family favorite. It has just the right crunch, a light sweetness and plenty of good-for-you grains and seeds. Most importantly, I keep the sugar low, letting the natural flavors of coconut, maple syrup and dried fruit shine through. It’s the perfect start to the day in Paris – or anywhere you call home.

granola

Ingredients

3 cups rolled oats
1 cup quinoa flakes
1 cup popped amaranth seeds (Tip: I bought them already popped. Popping them at home is tricky—they’re tiny and burn easily!)
½ cup chopped nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans – any combination you like)
½ cup shredded coconut (unsweetened)
½ cup brown sugar
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp flax seeds
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp sea salt
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup coconut oil

Granola

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine oats, quinoa flakes, amaranth, nuts, coconut, brown sugar, seeds, cinnamon and sea salt.
  3. Stir in maple syrup and vanilla extract.
  4. Add coconut oil and mix well until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Spread mixture in an even layer on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, stirring once or twice, until golden brown and fragrant.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
  8. Stir in dried fruit of your choice (raisins, cranberries, blueberries – all delicious!).

Lemon cake

Tucked away on charming rue Augereau in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, just a short stroll from the Eiffel Tower, a new café is quickly becoming a local favorite, and for good reason! Constant., opened by Ben Constant, son of legendary Michelin-starred chef Christian Constant, is a cozy spot that blends neighborhood charm with culinary excellence.

Paris Perfect founder Maddy recently visited and discovered firsthand why it’s already such a hit. “I stopped by for a quick coffee and a slice of lemon cake,” she said, “and fell in love with both.” So much so, in fact, that she set out to find another version of that lemon cake at two different pâtisseries, with no success. “All the others are poor relatives!” she laughed. “Ben coats the top of each slice with tart lemon syrup, which makes it irresistible.”

And in a heartwarming twist, Maddy spotted Christian Constant himself walking over to the café one morning with three dozen eggs, lending a hand to his son’s bustling kitchen and keeping the family’s culinary legacy alive. So impressed by the lemon cake, Maddy asked him for the recipe, and he graciously shared it. Now, we’re delighted to pass it along to you! It’s bright, citrusy and just the right amount of indulgent. The perfect treat to bake when you’re dreaming of Paris!

Ben Constant’s Lemon Cake Recipe

Oven Temperature: 180°C (356°F) for 10 min, then 160°C (320°F) for 40 min

  • 4 g baking powder (1 teaspoon)
  • 250 g sugar (1¼ cups)
  • 100 g heavy cream (7 Tablespoons)
  • 3 eggs
  • Pinch of salt

For the lemon syrup:

  • 100 g water (7 Tablespoons)
  • 30 g sugar (2½ Tablespoons)

  • Melt the butter gently, strain out impurities, and let cool.
  • Grate lemon zest and squeeze juice; set aside.
  • Sift flour and baking powder together.
  • Beat eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy.
  • Gently stir in lemon zest, salt, and heavy cream.

For the syrup:

  • Boil water and sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
  • Once the cake is cooled, slowly pour the warm syrup over the top, letting it soak in.

Bonus: Another 7th Arrondissement Dining Gem

The deliciousness doesn’t stop there. Just around the corner, Christian Constant has helped bring yet another dining gem to life: Le Bistrot des Fables. This cozy new bistro at 139 rue Saint-Dominique carries on the long-standing tradition of warm, welcoming Parisian spots where the food is comforting and the wine is always flowing. The space, once home to the beloved Café Constant and then Café Lignac, has been transformed by David Bottreau, longtime collaborator and right-hand man of Mr. Constant, who has a deep passion for French cuisine and neighborhood dining.

At the helm in the kitchen is Chef Guillaume Dehecq, who brings a heartfelt, traditional approach to every dish. From the solid wood tables to the lively counter, Le Bistrot des Fables feels like a return to the golden age of Parisian bistros, a timeless spot for a relaxed lunch or a cozy dinner with friends.

With so many culinary treasures popping up around every corner, it’s easy to see why we adore the 7th arrondissement. From cozy cafés and family-run restaurants to world-class museums and iconic monuments, this neighborhood has the perfect mix of food, culture and charm.

Ready to savor this delicious neighborhood? Many of our Paris vacation rentals are just steps from these local favorites. Whether you’re popping out for a morning espresso, indulging in a leisurely dinner or simply strolling the picturesque streets, the 7th offers the perfect home base to live like a local and eat like one too. Bon appétit!

Madeleines au Citron

Enjoy baking traditional Madeleines au Citron at home. (credit)

Recently, while spending time with close friends in Connecticut, our son and daughter, along with her roommates, joined us for some quality time together. Our son had recently bought a madeleine pan with the intention of baking these delicate French treats for friends. However, I couldn’t resist getting a head start on using it myself. Their name sounds just like mine. How could I resist?

Let me tell you, this madeleine pan is fantastic! It’s the perfect weight for even cooking and is impressively non-stick. If you’re in the market for one, here’s the link to the exact one I used. For my madeleine baking adventure, I started with a Marmiton recipe, as I often do, but I adapted it to my personal taste. I love lemon madeleines with LOTS of lemon flavor. I also reduced the sugar content compared to traditional recipes, aiming for a lighter, less sweet treat. It’s perfect for the summer!

12. Remove from pan while warm and enjoy. Bon appetit!

Here, you can indulge in antipasti, Italian artisanal charcuterie, fresh pasta, pizza and homemade specialties sourced from the best Italian and French producers. Be sure to pair your meal with their Italian roasted coffees and treat yourself to Italian ice cream, tiramisu or homemade panna cotta.

Peach pie

When autumn arrives in Paris, thoughts of classic fall flavors like cranberries and cinnamon are just around the corner. Yet, we often want to hold on to the warmth of those sunny summer days along the Seine just a little while longer. Here’s a special recipe from Madelyn, Paris Perfect founder, that celebrates the flavors of both seasons.  This fabulous peach pie has an autumnal twist – a delicious hazelnut crust. Madelyn shares, “For years I’ve made a cranberry pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas with a hazelnut crust. There’s something about hazelnuts that adds a wonderful contrast to the tart cranberries. It just melts in my mouth!” Add a bright touch of summer sweetness with this peach pie and the delightful toasty flavor of a hazelnut crust.

Preparing the Peaches

Skin the Peaches:

Poach pieces in boiling water for a few minutes. General instructions say 30 seconds, but it can take several minutes. Once they’re done, it’s so easy to simply peel off the skin. Once peeled, slice peaches as usual.

peach pie

Ingredients

With the sweetness of peaches, a low sugar recipe works well for this pie. In fact, ever since we tasted the delicious chocolates at Aleno et Rivoire, where Chef Rivoire uses birch sugar as a sweetener, we’ve started to bake and cook with birch sugar as well – also called Xylitol.

6 peaches

1 tsp vanilla extract (I actually added 2 tsp; we love vanilla and peaches!)

¼ C lemon juice

3 Tbsp cornstarch

½ C brown sugar or ½ C Xylitol

½ tsp cinnamon

Xylitol is the name of the sugar from birch bark or corn cobs. You cook in the same relationship as sugar. For me there is no aftertaste, which is why I like it.

After preparing the peaches, combine above ingredients and cook while whisking together. Bring to boil.

Then cook for 4 more minutes until thickened.

Toasted Hazelnut Crust

We loved the crunchy crust from Sally’s Baking Addiction for a Nutella Tart with Toasted Hazelnut Crust and used that as inspiration for this pie recipe.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C)

1 C (120 grams) hazelnuts

1 C (120 grams) flour

(recipe calls for 2 TBSP sugar but I didn’t add)

¾ tsp salt

115 grams butter, cubed and cold

3 TBSP ice water

Chop hazelnuts and toast in the oven at 300 degrees, about 7 minutes. Keep your eye on them.

Put hazelnuts, flour, salt and butter in food processor and mix.

Pour into bowl, and add ice water 1 Tbsp at a time until you get a good dough-y consistency. Press into a pie pan.

I cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes at 300 degrees.

Remove, pour in your peaches and let cool off. It’s delicious!

For another sweet treat, try our Peach Tarte Tatin recipe too. Bon appétit!
