Cassis before and after

Welcome to the beautiful Cassis apartment in Paris!

When Madelyn first opened the door to the apartment that would become Cassis, the sunlight streaming through its tall windows made her pause – she knew this was something special. Set along a quiet street in the 7th arrondissement, it had a layout full of promise and the kind of hidden charm we love to uncover. At Paris Perfect, we often help clients find and remodel their dream apartments, but sometimes we stumble across a place so full of potential that we simply can’t resist bringing it to life ourselves. Cassis was one of those rare finds!

AFTER: A charming setting in the 7th on a quiet street made this apartment stand out.

With a clear vision clear and plans in mind, the transformation began. Every corner of Cassis was re-imagined with care, from the way the light moves through the rooms to the small touches that make daily life feel easy. With the help of our trusted team of builders and contractors, we turned this once-dated space into a turnkey pied-à-terre—what the French call clé en main—thoughtfully finished down to the last detail. Before we look at all the changes, enjoy a walk through during the renovation project with Madelyn:

When the work was complete, it was time to find the perfect owners who would appreciate Cassis as much as we did. And when Annette and Christian first stepped inside, their joy confirmed what we knew from the start: Cassis was special. Best of all, while Cassis is now their cherished Parisian escape, it’s also available for monthly stays – giving you the chance to experience the same Parisian magic for yourself.

Let’s take a closer look at how this hidden gem was turned into the warm and elegant pied-à-terre of Annette and Christian’s dreams.

Living Room: Designed for Light & Comfort

Cassis

AFTER: Gorgeous and bright living room.

While the living room had beautiful tall windows, there were some small changes to the layout that opened up a lot of opportunities to improve the space. Instead of a proper doorway to the bedroom, there was a large opening in the wall dividing it from the living area. While this was perhaps chosen to create a bright open space, it really limited furnishing options in the living room. It had light but no warmth, and the lack of structure made it hard to imagine as a welcoming gathering spot.

BEFORE: Living room with large window (left). Determining the length to extend living room wall (right).

By extending a wall, we gave the room shape and created a better flow – all while still letting the natural light pour in. This also allowed space for something rare in Paris: a second powder room conveniently tucked away off the living room. Now the space feels complete, with room for comfortable seating and an inviting atmosphere.

AFTER: A well-designed and bright living room.

Knowing how much our clients often want the convenience of being able to welcome family or guests to stay with them in Paris, it was important to create a more private space as well as have room in the living area for a sofa bed. Plus, with our clever plans to add an extra powder room—which you’ll see next when we tackled the major bathroom remodel—we knew Cassis had the potential to make that happen. With the wall extended and a pocket door added for the bedroom, there was the perfect space to add a custom Italian sofa bed next to the entrance to the new powder room, making it easy to welcome friends or family!

AFTER: Gorgeous finished living room and dining area.

Not only were we able to add the sofa bed, but having room along the extended wall meant there was space for a charming dining area conveniently close to the kitchen. Adding mirrors on both walls captures the light from the large window and creates a beautiful sense of space in the area. A framed Hermès scarf anchors the décor, its colors echoed throughout the room – a quintessential Paris Perfect touch.

Bedroom: Elegant Storage & Serenity

AFTER: A perfectly charming bedroom.

While the bedroom was also full of light, it lacked privacy. Without a door, it felt more like an extension of the living room than a restful space of its own. There was also built in storage that meant the bed would have to be positioned flush against one wall. But our plans to rearrange the bathrooms meant we needed to re-do the storage to shift the bed away from the wall so we could move the door to the en suite bathroom.

BEFORE: On the left is the bedroom before work started. On the right you can see the new bathroom door and storage being constructed.

With the addition of a sliding door to close off the room, we created a true private sanctuary. Custom cabinetry around the bed, with mirrored panels, created wonderful brightness in the room while adding ample storage.

AFTER: Storage in the bedroom done beautifully.

The inset above the bed, decorated in soft blue toile de Jouy, is a nod to classic French style – subtle, elegant and timeless. Standing in the finished room for the first time, Christian declared with a smile that the bedroom is “parfaite.” That’s what we love to hear!

Bathrooms: A Touch of Luxury

AFTER: The new bright and beautiful en suite bathroom.

The apartment had only one large bathroom that didn’t make the best use of the available space. The fixtures were tired, the lighting was limited and overall it lacked the comfort and practicality modern homeowners expect.

BEFORE: Original bathroom on left with lots of wasted space and on the right the entrance to en suite bathroom.

The biggest part of the remodel at Cassis was dedicated to transforming the en suite into a bright, spacious bathroom plus an additional powder room accessed from the living room. The original bathroom in this apartment was as long as the bedroom and had large empty spaces for the washer/dryer. By moving the washing machine to a new location in a storage area near the kitchen, we realized we could design a beautiful en suite that was still plenty spacious and also have room for the powder room.

AFTER: New entrance to the en suite bathroom on the left.

The first step was moving the entrance to the en suite from the right side of the bedroom to the left side. Since the bed was now positioned away from the wall, it was possible to make that change, which you can see above.

DURING: Creating the bathroom entrances – before the wall was extended to close off the bedroom.

It’s never not inspiring to us to take a look back at projects like this one to see how relatively minor changes can make such a huge difference. This once open space is now so much more versatile simply by extending a wall and re-configuring the bathrooms. Well, we can say “simply,” of course, because we have such a remarkable team to bring our visions to life!

AFTER: Clean lines and beautiful design in the en suite.

After the remodel, the en suite bathroom now has a walk-in shower with rainwater shower head, a stylish vanity with generous storage and flattering lighting.

AFTER: Entrance to new powder room from living room on right.

Now the final touch was to add the powder room off the living room – an addition that makes hosting guests so much easier.

AFTER: New powder room with access off of the living room.

Annette’s reaction captured the joy of the moment: she opened the door, admired the wallpaper and called out, “Christian, look, there’s a separate, beautiful powder room!”

Kitchen: A Foodie’s Dream

AFTER: Fully-equipped kitchen next to the living room.

The kitchen had one redeeming feature: a large window that filled the room with light. Otherwise, it was old, cramped and impractical, with limited storage and fixtures that felt out of step with the rest of the apartment.

BEFORE: Original kitchen had a distinct lack of storage plus only a tiny under counter refrigerator.

After puzzling about the original kitchen design, we realized it was necessary to completely gut it and start anew. The kitchen now combines clean lines with warm finishes, including new cabinetry, sleek countertops and a mirrored backsplash that bounces the light throughout the space. High-quality appliances, including a full fridge-freezer, make it both stylish and efficient.

AFTER: A warm, welcoming and inspiring kitchen!

As two passionate food lovers, the kitchen at Cassis was the first thing that caught their eyes. For Annette, who has spent a lifetime in the restaurant business, this was the moment the apartment truly felt like home. She stepped inside, looked around, and said with delight, “I can’t wait to cook.”

Saumur

It’s not often that we get to share a before-and-after story twice. But every now and then, inspiration strikes again! That’s just what happened with the charming Saumur apartment, a studio with a beautiful balcony overlooking the Rue Cler market street. Our guests have always loved its clever layout, which originally featured a Murphy bed that folded down over the sofa. But we had a feeling we could take the design one step further. What if we could transform Saumur into a true one-bedroom with separate living and sleeping spaces? Paris Perfect founder Madelyn couldn’t resist the challenge!

This isn’t the first time Saumur has undergone a dramatic redesign. Back in 2018, we shared its first remodel – and now we’re back for the encore. Come along as we reveal Saumur’s latest transformation to the perfect one bedroom pied-à-terre in Paris.

Creating a New Living Room

BEFORE: Combined living room and sleeping area.

The first step in turning Saumur into a one-bedroom was creating a dedicated living space. After our first renovation, the studio layout had a clever Murphy bed, but what caught Madelyn’s attention was that the apartment was already partially divided. By replacing the closet wall with a standard wall, it would be possible to shift the layout and carve out a larger, open-plan living area.

AFTER: A new separate living space – everything needed for relaxing at home in Paris!

Saumur has always been beautifully bright thanks to its top-floor location and three sets of French doors opening onto a long balcony. In the new living area, this natural light pours in, making the space feel instantly open and inviting. We took advantage of this by incorporating mirrors—a favorite Paris Perfect design touch—to reflect the light and create a sense of depth. A large wall mirror above the sofa not only makes the room feel more spacious but also bounces light throughout the space.

AFTER: A mirrored wall is a great way to create a sense of space.

To make the most of every inch, we added a new closet at the entrance for practical storage and built-in shelving around a Paris Perfect signature detail – a framed Hermès scarf. For this remodel, we selected a scarf with colorful tones, which became the inspiration for the pink color accents in the room. Take a closer look at the Hermés scarf on this walk through tour of the Saumur with Madelyn.

AFTER: An inviting open plan living room.

To make the most of the living area space, we added an L-shaped sofa. Now you can sit back and enjoy a movie on the TV or simply take in the view through the French doors to the balcony. The layout feels more relaxed and versatile, perfect for unwinding after a day in Paris.

Decorating a Beautiful Bedroom

BEFORE: The Murphy bed opened to transform the living area into a sleeping space.

With a separate bedroom at last, the design was kept simple and elegant, making the most of both space and light. The bedroom benefits from the same top-floor location as the living room, with another set of French doors that open to the balcony. This keeps the room bright during the day and provides a charming Parisian view.

Saumur

AFTER: Moving the wall created more space in the living area.

For this remodel, we also streamlined the bedroom design. The look is cleaner, the palette softer and the layout more functional, creating a calm and uncluttered atmosphere that feels distinctly Parisian.

BEFORE: The living room was full of charm and Parisian touches.

We leaned into the natural light by continuing the mirror theme here as well. A mirrored wall, centered with a striking starburst antique mirror, creates a sense of spaciousness and reflects the daylight beautifully. The mirrors also give the room a touch of glamour while maintaining a soft, welcoming feel.

AFTER: Beautiful antique touches in the bedroom.

The rest of the design focuses on comfort and practicality. Classic paneling frames the walls, while an antique chandelier adds a warm glow. Built-in shelving and a wardrobe cleverly tucked under the eaves provide storage without crowding the room. The palette of muted tones enhances the light and creates a peaceful space to unwind after a day in Paris.

Saumur

AFTER: New sofa bed in the living room.

Thanks to the new layout, Saumur now offers two sleeping areas. The sofa bed in the living room opens into a comfortable double bed, giving guests the flexibility of a second sleeping space. Very versatile!

Bright Kitchen & Dining Area

BEFORE: The well-designed kitchen at Saumur after the first renovation.

The kitchen and dining area in Saumur stayed in their original footprint, but with only some small changes we were able to make a remarkable difference in the overall feeling of the space. While the layout was always efficient, the updates brought in a new sense of brightness and warmth that perfectly complements the apartment’s refreshed style.

AFTER: Simply adding new chairs can make a big change in a room.

Another key change was adding a mirrored backsplash. This is one of our favorite design tricks, especially in compact kitchens, as it reflects light and adds depth. In Saumur, it works beautifully to visually open the kitchen while echoing the apartment’s overall design theme of maximizing brightness and space.

AFTER: The mirrored backsplash makes all the difference!

We also refreshed the cabinetry in the kitchen to harmonize with the lighter palette. The updated cabinets have a crisp, clean look that feels timeless while also blending beautifully with the apartment’s Parisian charm. Subtle hardware and a refined finish add just the right amount of detail without overwhelming the small space.

BEFORE: Guests love the charming dining table in Saumur.

One of the smallest yet most impactful changes was the shift in color palette. The previous taupe paint was replaced with a rich yet bright ivory, which instantly lifted the room’s atmosphere. This change, combined with the lighter tones used throughout the apartment, created a more open environment.

Saumur

AFTER: A lovely space whether you’re dining indoors our outside on the balcony.

The dining area also received a thoughtful refresh. The table stayed perfectly positioned next to the kitchen, but the dining chairs were updated in lighter colors to match the new airy palette. This simple change creates a cohesive flow from the kitchen into the dining space, making it a welcoming place to enjoy a leisurely meal or a glass of wine after a day exploring Paris.

The Balcony As Charming as Ever!

Saumur

AFTER: Step out onto the long balcony.

Some things simply can’t be improved – and Saumur’s balcony is one of them! Stretching the length of the apartment, it opens from three sets of French doors, filling the interior with light and connecting each room to the lively Rue Cler market street below. Whether you’re enjoying your morning coffee or sampling the day’s finds from the shops below, the view is as charming as ever. With the apartment’s new layout and refreshed interiors, the balcony feels like an extension of the living space. It’s a quintessential Parisian touch that makes Saumur so special.

Saumur

AFTER: A postcard view overlooking the rooftops of Paris.

With its clever new layout and beautifully refreshed design, Saumur has entered an exciting new chapter. It’s rare for us to redesign an apartment twice, but when inspiration strikes, the results are worth sharing. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve stayed here before, you’ll love experiencing the new one-bedroom design. Plan your stay at Saumur and see why this Parisian favorite keeps inspiring us—and our guests—time and again.

Hermès

At Paris Perfect, decorating our vacation rentals is more than just design – it’s about creating a timeless, elegant space that reflects the beauty and heritage of Paris. Over the years, we’ve developed a signature design element that has become a much-loved feature in our apartments: framed vintage Hermès scarves. These iconic silk pieces are the perfect blend of artistry, history and luxury, and they’ve become an integral part of the décor in our properties.

What started as a design idea for our Paris Perfect Shared co-ownership properties has grown into something truly special, resonating with guests and design lovers alike. A recent video of Paris Perfect founder Madelyn going on a sourcing trip to find vintage Hermès scarves in Paris has already garnered over a million views (watch it here!), and the response has been overwhelming. So, in this post, we’re sharing more about how we select, frame and incorporate these beautiful scarves into our vacation rentals – and where you can shop for them yourself in Paris!

Hermès scarves like this one at Cairanne are stunning works of art!

Why Hermès Scarves?

There’s a reason Hermès scarves are so iconic. Known for their impeccable craftsmanship, intricate designs and rich history, these scarves have been a fashion staple since the 1930s. But beyond wearing them, we’ve found that they make stunning statement pieces when framed.

Our approach to interior design at Paris Perfect is all about timeless elegance – creating apartments that will stand the test of time, just like these scarves. Each piece we select adds a distinctive touch to our apartments, often becoming the inspiration for an entire room’s color scheme.

Take the Conti co-ownership apartment, for example. The striking black, white and gold design of the scarf hand-picked for this apartment completely shaped the décor. The tassels in the scarf’s pattern inspired the sconces on either side of the fireplace, while the bold black shades were a direct nod to the striking black accents in the design. You can read more about how the scarf patterns influence decorating in many of fractional properties here.

At the Conti, the Hermès scarf inspired the decor.

Finding the Perfect Scarves

Sourcing the perfect vintage Hermès scarves is an art in itself. Madelyn has built relationships with experts in Paris who specialize in authentic, high-quality pieces. Two of our favorite sources include:

  • Véronique at Le Grenier d’Amatxi – Located in Marché Vernaison at the Paris Flea Market, Véronique is a true expert with an encyclopedic knowledge of Hermès designs, artists and history. This is always one of Madelyn’s first stops when searching for scarves.
  • CornerLuxe Bosquet – A centrally located boutique in the 7th arrondissement, just a short walk from many of our Paris vacation rentals. Along with scarves, you’ll find a carefully curated collection of vintage luxury pieces.
Hermès scarf framed

The beautiful Hermès scarf in the Syrah bedroom.

The Framing Process

Once we’ve chosen the perfect scarves, the next step is framing them. This is where Isadorure, a specialized framing workshop in the 7th arrondissement, comes in. Isabelle and her team are experts in restoring antique gilded wood and framing artwork to perfection.

One recent update in our framing process is opting to frame scarves without glass. While traditional framing methods include a glass cover, we’ve found that scarves hold their color exceptionally well, and removing the glass prevents glare and keeps the frames lighter. The first apartment where we tried this was Syrah, and we loved the result! A simple feather duster is all that’s needed to keep the fabric clean.

Enjoy a stay at our charming Saumur apartment rental – with our signature Hermès scarf touch!

For a unique twist, our Saumur apartment features a smaller Hermès scarf, so we worked with Isabelle to create a double frame and custom-painted matting to make the piece stand out. It’s now the perfect finishing touch to this beautiful one-bedroom vacation rental on Rue Cler.

Where You Can Spot Hermès Scarves in Our Apartments

We’ve incorporated these beautiful scarves into several of our vacation rentals across Paris and Italy, adding a distinctive and elegant touch to each space. In addition to Saumur, here are just a few of our favorites:

  • La Place Dauphine – Our charming apartments in this historic square were recently updated, and each one now features a stunning Hermès scarf to complement its timeless Parisian décor. Stay tuned to the Paris Perfect blog for a fun look at the scarves we selected for La Place Dauphine!
  • Vivant – When you step inside this co-ownership apartment you’re greeted by the iconic Les Clefs design Hermès created by Caty Latham in 1965. This vintage beauty came from the Paris puces and we love how the elegant keys symbolize a warm welcome to your own Paris apartment. Want to experience it for yourself? Right now there’s a share available of the Vivant. Find out more here!
  • Saint-Pourçain – The scarf in this apartment brings a vibrant pop of color to one of the lovely bedrooms, making it a lively and inviting retreat. It’s the perfect example of how you can use a scarf to not just inspire a room’s design but also add color in a stylish way.

A vintage scarf is the perfect way to add a pop of color like at the Saint-Pourçain vacation rental.

  • Concerto – Our signature Hermès design isn’t just in Paris – you’ll also find it in select Italy Perfect vacation rentals! At the Concerto in Florence, the primary bedroom’s beautiful design was inspired by a sumptuous red and gold vintage Hermès scarf.
  • Maestro – At Maestro, our stunning fractional apartment in Florence, the primary bedroom’s rich gold and deep blue tones were drawn from a beautifully framed Hermès scarf. And bonus – there’s currently a share available! Find out more here about making this remarkable space your home in Florence.

Bringing a Piece of Paris Home

Many guests who stay in our apartments fall in love with the look of framed Hermès scarves and ask where they can shop for their own. If you’re inspired to bring a piece of Paris home with you, we highly recommend visiting Véronique at Le Grenier d’Amatxi or CornerLuxe Bosquet. A framed Hermès scarf makes for a unique and timeless souvenir – one that perfectly captures the essence of Parisian elegance.

LIVING ROOM: CREATING A WELCOMING & COMFORTABLE SPACE

Paris apartment for sale

AFTER: An inviting living room where you’ll feel at home.

From the moment we stepped into the Fleurie apartment, we knew it had that rare Parisian magic – what we like to call “good bones.” Set in a charming historic building near the iconic Fontaine de Mars, Fleurie enjoys a prime location in the sought-after 7th arrondissement. With a sunny 5th floor (6th floor North American) location, plus elevator access, the apartment’s standout feature was immediately clear: a stunning long balcony that stretches the length of the apartment, lined with four sets of classic French doors. It was a dream waiting to be realized.

Yet, like many of the best apartments in Paris, Fleurie was in need of a thoughtful renovation to truly make it shine. The layout was awkward and, surprisingly, there wasn’t a true living room – just a small sitting area that felt cramped and uninviting. The kitchen was outdated and far too tiny, and with only one bathroom, the apartment wasn’t living up to its full potential.

Plus, we fully updated all the electrics and added beautiful new parquet floors throughout the apartment. With decades of experience in Paris renovations and a top-tier design team, including Ann Huff from Huff Harrington, we knew exactly how to bring out Fleurie’s elegance and charm.

BEFORE: The first room after entering the apartment was the dining room, with a sitting room next and at the far end a bedroom.

Reimagining the Space – Switching the Living and Dining Rooms

Originally, the first room off the an entrance hallway was used as a dining room, while a long, narrow kitchen was tucked awkwardly into a hallway at the back of the apartment. Beyond the dining area was a small sitting room, which didn’t function well – there wasn’t even enough space for a proper sofa. While the large room at the opposite end of the apartment would be fine to remain as the primary bedroom, we quickly saw an opportunity to rethink the flow of the entire apartment and change it for the better.

Paris apartment renovation

DURING: Keeping the historic elements but everything else needed updating.

The first step? Create a proper living room. The existing sitting room in the middle of the apartment wasn’t the right fit, so we made the choice to swap the spaces – relocating the dining area to the middle room and transforming the first room into a beautiful, welcoming living room. By removing the hallway walls at the entrance, we instantly opened up the space, creating an airy, light-filled room that makes the apartment feel even larger.

Paris apartment remodel

AFTER: A comfortable and lovely living room at Fleurie.

Preserving Historic Details, Adding Modern Comfort

One of the greatest joys of working with historic Parisian apartments is striking the perfect balance between old-world charm and modern comfort. In Fleurie, we preserved the gorgeous original ceiling molding and a beautiful antique Prussian fireplace, which now serves as a striking decorative feature in the corner of the room. These elements add a sense of history and elegance that can’t be replicated.

BEFORE: We knew right away that elements like this antique ceramic fireplace would have to be a part of the final design.

For the furnishings, we focused on sophisticated comfort – a plush sofa bed, stylish armchairs and bright pops of color that enhance the apartment’s light-filled ambiance. A wall-mounted TV blends seamlessly into the design, while antique mirrors and chandeliers add that signature Parisian refinement. Now, when you step into Fleurie, you’re greeted by an inviting and beautifully designed living space that immediately feels like home.

AFTER: Step inside and your eye is drawn all the way down the length of this gorgeous apartment.

From here, the view carries through the apartment – past the elegant new dining area and into the beautifully redesigned primary bedroom. Up next, let’s take a look at how we created a stunning dining room and redesigned the kitchen to fit seamlessly into Fleurie’s new layout.

CREATING A NEW OPEN PLAN DINING ROOM & KITCHEN

AFTER: Gorgeous new dining area at Fleurie.

At the heart of the apartment, the middle room was originally used as a sitting area, but it didn’t quite work. It felt disconnected and underutilized, with a peculiar half-walled off section in the back. The reason? The kitchen had been tucked into a long and narrow L-shaped passageway that wound from the front entrance behind the original dining room and around to this space. The result was a cramped and outdated kitchen, awkwardly linked to the bathroom – a layout that was anything but ideal.

BEFORE: Not very functional as a living room, but ideal for a dining room.

We knew there was a much better way to use this space. By removing the entrance hallway and closing off the original access to the kitchen and bathroom, we reimagined this central room as a stunning open-plan dining room and modern kitchen.

BEFORE: Peculiar space at the back of the room had potential.

Designing a Beautiful & Functional Kitchen

The first step was removing the half-wall that had sectioned off part of the room, instantly opening up the space for a bright and airy kitchen. There was also a fireplace mantel in the room that we decided to remove as it was more modern and didn’t have quite enough historic charm to let it take up so much space in the room.

Paris apartment before renovation

BEFORE: We knew we could use this space much better.

The odd space at the back of the room really wasn’t a hallway but also wasn’t very functional space. When remodeling an apartment in Paris, utilizing every square inch is essential!

Paris apartment before renovation

BEFORE: The long, narrow kitchen connected to the bathroom.

When we switched the location of the dining room with the living room, we knew we would have to move the kitchen as well, because it originally connected to the center room through the … bathroom. Yes, you read that right! But the kitchen was just in such bad shape it required a full renovation anyway. With our expert architects and builders, relocating the kitchen wasn’t an issue at all.

AFTER: Closed off access to the old bathroom to create stunning new kitchen.

A streamlined layout was key, so we designed it with sleek white cabinetry and a striking marble backsplash, keeping it light and timeless. To maximize functionality, we installed a built-in refrigerator on the left and created a clever storage area on the right for appliances, bridging the kitchen and dining area with both style and practicality.

AFTER: Access to the second bedroom is still through the doorway on the left.

An Elegant Dining Space

With the kitchen in place, the next step was transforming the dining area into a space worthy of long, leisurely meals. To enhance its warmth and character, we added classic wall paneling and soft-toned wallpaper, bringing in a refined Parisian feel. A gorgeous antique mirror anchors the room, reflecting light from the elegant chandeliers and sconces, which create a shimmering glow in the evenings and fill the space with natural light by day.

AFTER: Hard to imagine this is the same space – it’s been completely redesigned!

At the center of the dining room, an Italian marble-topped oval table now invites you to gather, whether for a quiet meal at home or a special evening with friends. And just beyond the dining area, the balcony is complete with a charming bistro table – perfect for morning coffee with a classic Paris view.

AFTER: Whether dining indoors or enjoying a glass of wine on the balcony – this apartment is designed for Parisian living.

A DREAMY PRIMARY BEDROOM

AFTER: The elegant design flows naturally from the dining area into the primary bedroom.

The primary bedroom in Fleurie already had an enviable foundation – a spacious layout with two sets of French doors that open directly onto the apartment’s beautiful balcony. A Parisian dream come true! With so much potential, our goal was to elevate the space to match its incredible features.

BEFORE: A busy design that didn’t in any way show off the room at its best.

While we love antique furniture and decor, when we first stepped into the primary bedroom at Fleurie it wasn’t easy to see the potential this room had to shine. It was crowded with heavy and dark furniture and the darker colored walls made it feel small. And that’s not an easy feat with two large French doors in the room. There was also a doorway that led to the adjacent room, which was being used as a study.

BEFORE: The primary bedroom had great features, but needed an updated and elegant design.

The first step was improving the layout. We closed off the original doorway between the bedroom and the second room/ study, creating a proper separation and giving this bedroom the privacy it deserved. We then positioned the bed on the opposite side of the room to make the most of the stunning French doors – imagine waking up each morning to views of Paris bathed in soft light.

AFTER: An irresistible view to start your day in Paris!

To bring warmth and elegance to the room, we added soft-toned wallpaper inset within classic paneling, creating a subtle yet refined backdrop. A graceful antique chandelier, paired with delicate wall sconces and a vintage mirror, adds a touch of timeless Parisian style. We also maximized functionality by incorporating built-in storage, ensuring the space is as practical as it is beautiful. Now, this room feels like the luxurious retreat it was always meant to be.

AFTER: We loved sourcing the perfect antique finishing touches for Fleurie!

DESIGNING A SWEET SECOND BEDROOM

AFTER: Creating a beautiful second bedroom was a top priority for this remodel.

Once we closed off the connecting doorway, the former study space could finally shine as a true second bedroom. Conveniently accessed from the newly designed kitchen, this room was transformed into a cozy yet elegant retreat, perfect for guests or family.

BEFORE: A room with a view – but transforming it to a bedroom required some work.

We kept the charming historic fireplace mantel as a focal point, preserving a lovely touch of the apartment’s past. Soft green wallpaper with delicate paneling brings warmth and sophistication to the space, complemented by carefully chosen antique details. A graceful gold-framed mirror, along with an elegant chandelier and wall sconces, lends the room a subtle glow, especially in the evening.

AFTER: A design that celebrates the historic details.

The large French doors not only fill the space with natural light but also offer a charming view of the 7th arrondissement. We added built-in storage to make the room as functional as it is beautiful. This sweet second bedroom now feels like a peaceful hideaway – full of Parisian charm and perfect for relaxing after a day in the city.

AFTER: That second entrance to the room came in handy and allowed us to create this lovely bedroom.

TRANSFORMING ONE AWKWARD BATHROOM INTO TWO FULL BATHROOMS

AFTER: The final result – two beautiful bathrooms!

Like many Parisian apartments in historic buildings, Fleurie originally had just one small, awkwardly placed bathroom. It was tucked behind the original dining room and connected directly to the kitchen – not exactly the most practical or appealing setup.

Paris apartment before renovation

BEFORE: The entrance hallway (LEFT) was removed to add space for the new living room while the old kitchen (RIGHT) became bathroom 1.

This dimly lit space of the original bathroom had only a tiny shower and sink, while a separate powder room on the opposite side of the kitchen offered a toilet and sink.

Paris apartment before renovation

BEFORE: The bathroom was located between the kitchen and the sitting room.

The challenge wasn’t just modernizing the bathroom – it was figuring out how to create two full bathrooms, a must-have feature for a two-bedroom apartment. Going into this remodel project, adding a second full bathroom was one of our top priorities.

Paris apartment renovation

DURING: Look at all the space added by removing the hallway! Now you can see the area where both bathrooms would be located at the back of the living room.

The key to making this transformation possible came when we redesigned the apartment’s layout. By tearing out the entrance hallway and relocating the kitchen to the center room (now the open-plan kitchen and dining area), we freed up valuable space at the back of the apartment off the living room – enough to design two spacious and bright bathrooms.

AFTER: The beautiful new bathroom 1 at Fleurie.

A Bright and spacious Main Bathroom

The first bathroom now sits in the corner where the apartment’s kitchen was originally located. Thanks to a large window, this room is filled with natural light – something you rarely find in Paris bathrooms. We kept the design fresh and timeless with bright white textured tiles that reflect the light beautifully. A spacious walk-in shower, elegant sink and modern toilet complete the space, creating a serene and functional bathroom.

AFTER: Can you even imagine this is the same space as the kitchen?

A Stunning Second Bathroom with Bonus Features

The second bathroom was perhaps the most dramatic transformation. It’s located where the old, dark bathroom once stood, but the changes are night and day. We closed off the original awkward access to the kitchen, fully redefining the space.

AFTER: What an improvement! This bathroom is located where the original bathroom was at.

Now, this bathroom features a large shower, a stylish sink with plenty of storage, and—a true Parisian luxury—a separate washer and dryer tucked neatly into the design.

AFTER: We focus on adding all the comforts of home in our renovations.

This addition of the washer and dryer was possible thanks to the original separate powder room. We updated that as well and were able to turn what was once a cramped and gloomy area into a bright, fully functional second bathroom.

AFTER: Don’t forget the original powder room! That got a full makeover as well.

With these changes, Fleurie now offers two beautiful full bathrooms, each thoughtfully designed for comfort and convenience – a rarity in Paris apartments and the perfect complement to this stunning two-bedroom home.

FLEURIE’S PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE – THE BALCONY!

AFTER: One thing didn’t change – that gorgeous balcony!

While the interior transformation of Fleurie is nothing short of spectacular, there’s one feature that has always been the heart of this apartment – the incredible balcony. Running the entire length of the apartment, this rare gem is the ultimate Parisian luxury. Surrounded by the beautiful historic architecture of the 7th arrondissement, the balcony is an amazing spot to simply sit and soak in the charm of the neighborhood. From here, you can gaze over the charming Fontaine de Mars below and watch the world go by. And if you glance upward, you’ll catch a glimpse of something extra special – the tip of the Eiffel Tower peeking over the rooftops.

It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down, sip a glass of wine and truly savor Parisian life. Whether enjoying a morning coffee, a leisurely lunch or a magical evening as the city lights twinkle, this balcony is the pièce de résistance that makes Fleurie so unforgettable.

Fleurie is now for sale! If you’ve been dreaming of a Paris apartment with timeless charm, modern comforts and a balcony like no other, this is your chance. Take a tour of Fleurie with Maddy here.  See all the details and the price here or contact us at sales@parisperfect.com to find out more!

Paris apartment remodel before and after

Get ready for the before & after transformation of this gorgeous Paris apartment!

A good Paris remodeling project is hard to resist, especially when we have the chance to transform a tired old apartment into a beautiful home in the City of Light. We knew the moment we stepped into the apartment that would become Beaux Rêves that it was something very special. The location along an elegant tree-lined boulevard in the 7th arrondissement and its long balcony with Eiffel Tower views made it a dream property. Well, at least, it had that potential, but it wasn’t going to be a simple task.

Our mission, should we choose to accept it, was to take this very poor condition one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment and turn it into an absolutely perfect, move-in ready Parisian home. And not only would it have gorgeous and comfortable living spaces and a peaceful bedroom, but it would also have a brand new modern kitchen and not just one, but two full bathrooms. Plus a desk area for working at home!

AFTER: Unbeatable Paris view from the Beaux Rêves.

Never ones to turn down a challenging Paris apartment remodel, our team came together to create a masterpiece. Upon completion, the beautiful Beaux Rêves apartment sold immediately to a very happy buyer who was looking for a hassle free way to enjoy living in Paris. It was ready for them to move right it! This renovation was such a labor of love and we’re excited to share a look behind the scenes at the before and after at Beaux Rêves.

Living Room: Parisian Living at its Finest

Paris apartment decorated for sale

AFTER: The living room complete with finishing touches.

With large French doors that filled the room with light and a wonderful long balcony, this apartment deserved to be as spectacular as its setting in the 7th arrondissement. However, what we started with were dark rooms, paint peeling from the ceilings, water damaged and dirty walls and outdated wiring and fixtures. A complete and total renovation was required. While a tremendous amount of work, it meant we had the chance to replace the dark floors with beautiful new light yet still warm toned herringbone parquet throughout the entire apartment. It is was also the opportunity to install new wiring and central air conditioning.

remodeling apartment in paris

BEFORE: Crowded and dark living room.

When we first viewed the apartment, the larger of the two living areas was being used as a dining room. Not a very functional use of space, we decided instead to use this room with two large French doors as the living room. There was very little in the original living spaces that could be salvaged, but there was a lovely statement marble fireplace mantle that was an original feature we wanted to keep in the final design. Looking beyond the peeling paint on the ceilings, there was the most beautiful crown molding that needing some restoration work, but was also worth preserving

BEFORE: The crown molding and the fireplace were saved. The rest had to go!

Older Paris apartments are often very chopped up and divided, which was the case with this apartment. To create a larger sense of space, we removed the glass paneled door to the hallway from the living room. Two storage niches on either side of the fireplace created the perfect opportunity to open them up as doorways to the adjacent room for a better flow between the living room and the new open-plan kitchen and dining area.

paris apartment renovation

AFTER: Two new openings on either side of the fireplace connect the living spaces.

With a new and more open design, the entire apartment feels more spacious. Opening up the doorways on either side of the fireplace makes the marble mantle topped with a stunning antique frame the focal point for the room. Comfortable modern decor and antique lights and mirror from the Puces Paris flea market are the perfect finishing touches. This space now lives up to its stellar location and is truly a place a beautiful dreams – the meaning of the apartment’s name Beaux Rêves.

Adding a New Open-Plan Kitchen and Dining Room

Paris apartment for sale with new kitchen

AFTER: Gorgeous kitchen with dining area.

After creating such a beautiful and welcoming living room, it was time to solve another issue with this Paris apartment. The original kitchen was a long and narrow room tucked away in the back of the apartment. With a balcony that’s perfect for a bistro table and dining outdoors with a view of the Eiffel Tower, it only made sense to move the kitchen to the opposite side of the apartment. Now there is a gorgeous open-plan kitchen with dining area that opens directly to balcony – perfection!

how to paris apartment remodel before after

BEFORE: This sitting room was turned into a open-plan kitchen and dining room.

Moving the kitchen from its original location, which you can see below, created a large space that we could utilize to create a second bathroom and even a desk area for working at home.

BEFORE: The kitchen originally took up a large amount of space in the apartment.

The open-plan kitchen and dining area is especially appealing at Beaux Rêves, where you can open the French doors and take in the view over the treetops of classic Parisian buildings. Shop at the local markets and enjoy the ease of preparing your favorite meals and dining in the elegantly designed space or step out onto the balcony. Whether you’re starting your day with coffee and the Eiffel Tower, enjoying a quiet time reading or watching the lights sparkle on the Eiffel Tower, the balcony when so well incorporated into the apartment’s design quickly becomes a favorite living space.

AFTER: Comfortable and beautiful – a dream kitchen in Paris!

The modern kitchen is anchored by another marble fireplace mantle topped with an antique gold frame. Every detail works together to create a harmonious setting, with the sleek white and grey cabinets complementing the marble table, counters and backsplash.

BEFORE: This room originally felt closed off.

The dining area is hardly even recognizable from before to after! You might think that creating two new openings to the living room would make the room feel smaller, but it has the opposite effect. Now it is light and spacious and there’s room for a modern marble-topped table and four chairs.

AFTER: Two entrances to the living room on either side of the dining table.

A Bedroom Perfect for Parisian Dreams

paris bedroom remodel

AFTER: Creating a serene bedroom with a Parisian touch.

Although it wasn’t in very good shape at all, the one part of the apartment that didn’t require significant structural work was the bedroom. The room had a nice large window overlooking the inner part of the building, which was an excellent feature. The room had good bones but was in dire need of some TLC.

how to remodel Paris apartment

BEFORE: The original bedroom needed a lot of updating.

With the new bedroom, the focus was on functional design with an elegant touch. The wall panels and floral wallpaper add a traditional touch that’s accented by modern wall sconces, lighting and a beautiful antique mirror. While we love adding historic design elements, we always ensure there are also all the little comfortable details like wall-mounted lamps for reading in bed.

AFTER: Sweet dreams in the Beaux Reves bedroom!

Creating new storage solutions was a top priority and was solved by the addition of a mirror paneled built-in wardrobe. This along with the large storage under the container bed means there’s plenty of room to feel right at home.

AFTER: Design and comfort in the new bedroom.

Bathrooms: Redesigning with Modern Comforts in Mind

AFTER: A completely new look for the shower room.

As with most of our Paris apartment remodels, the bathroom situation needed some serious attention. This apartment’s main bathroom was originally split between a narrow bathroom with shower and sink that was located at the end of the hallway and then a tiny powder room with toilet near the entrance. Needless to say, everything had to go!

Before and after Paris apartment remodel

BEFORE: The original shower room (left) and the dark powder room (right) needed a complete makeover.

Once we had a clean slate to work with, we opted for a bright and modern design with light colored marble for the shower tiles and sink. The light tones create a sense of space while the gold fixtures add a warm touch. The luminous new shower room has a crisp modern design and plenty of storage.

Adding a second bathroom is always a priority, even in one-bedroom apartments, since it makes it far more comfortable, especially if you have guests visiting. After considering several different configurations, we decided to utilize the kitchen space to create a second full bathroom. While the kitchen felt awkward and dingy, we knew there was a lot of potential here.

Paris kitchen and bathroom remodel

BEFORE: This angle of the old kitchen was transformed into a second full bathroom.

The final result doesn’t even seem like the same place! The new second bathroom has a glass enclosed shower, a wide sink with built-in storage and a second toilet. The woven pattern floor tiles are a lovely touch and the combination of the large window and mirror over the sink fill the room with light.

AFTER: Second full bathroom replaced the original kitchen.

Of course, we couldn’t forget that little powder room by the entrance. It got a total revamp as well with striking geometric tiles and a new sink. We love it!

All in the Details

AFTER: Creating a space to work from home in Paris.

And, of course, the best renovations are always in the details. After relocating the kitchen, there was extra space to create a work area at Beaux Rêves. We know many of our owners need to keep up with work while in Paris or enjoy having a dedicated space for their laptops.

The enchantment of the Seine captured by Maurice Fallies – Available in the Paris Perfect Store!

We are always on the lookout for the perfect finishing touches for our Paris vacation rentals and fractional co-ownership properties. Whether that’s scouring the flea markets for just the right sized antique mirror or bringing a beautiful chandelier back to life, the décor for our apartments is all carefully selected. Artwork is, of course, a very important final touch! One incredible element we have incorporated into recent projects are original watercolors and paintings by the Parisian Post-Impressionist master Maurice Fallies (1883-1965). We were very fortunate to be able to purchase a collection of his artwork from his descendants and each one tells a unique story of Paris.

Maurice Fallies French post-impressionist paintings

A serene watercolor of Chartres Cathedral by Maurice Fallies.

A wonderful little discovery, Fallies was a recognized painter at the turn of the 20th century and was known for his depictions of Parisian street scenes. He studied under the Hungarian- French painter François Gall (1912-1987) who was noted for his Impressionist style. Greatly influenced by artists like Edgar Degas, Gall’s paintings highlight similar subjects, such as Parisian life, still life and landscapes. Fallies followed closely in style and subject matter with Gall and it’s even said that he didn’t sign some of his own paintings in order to create uncertainty about whether he or Gall had painted the work!

Promenade Sur Le Pont Neuf by Maurice Fallies – Available now from Paris Perfect!

Brilliant at capturing the motion and color of Paris and of an industrializing century, his works hum with the energy of this moment in history. It’s a Paris where the iconic bridges and historic landmarks sit side by side with movement and advancement, like cars, trolleys and little steam powered boats chugging along the Seine next to the Pont Neuf – the oldest bridge in Paris. Some of the most captivating paintings by Fallies are a series of sunsets on the Seine that show the City of Light at one of its most enchanting moments.

A beautiful sunset by Maurice Fallies – See more on the Paris Perfect Store!

We love how his paintings highlight all the varied colors of Paris in every season of the year. In one painting you’ll see the warm tones of autumnal trees against Sacre-Coeur or in another the brilliance of summer with the trees along the Seine leafed out while Parisians and cars bustle across the Pont Neuf. Continuing the traditions of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, Fallies’s paintings depict Parisians and everyday life—like shopping on Rue de la Boulangerie or a stroll through the Jardin de Luxembourg—right alongside iconic landmarks.

Finding the Perfect Address in Paris

Sancerre

Unbelievable view of the Eiffel Tower from Sancerre!

We are constantly on the lookout and view many apartments—and we mean many—always in search of those few and very rare properties that meet all the requirements for a Paris Perfect Shared home. Does it have a prime address in the best neighborhoods? Is the building historic yet updated with modern features like elevator and the ability to add air conditioning? Is it full of light and located on an upper floor? And, the cherry on top, does it have a spectacular view?

BEFORE: Stepping into the Sancerre and seeing the potential.

With over 20 years of experience creating beautiful vacation rentals and now fractional co-ownership apartments in the 7th arrondissement, we know the best addresses and where to find those rare apartments that tick off every box. As soon as we saw the address for Sancerre, we knew it was perfect. The location overlooking the elegant tree-lined avenue de la Bourdonnais was west facing to capture beautiful light all day. Stepping inside, it was more spectacular than expected with 8 sets of large French windows around the apartment. Even better, it’s located on a corner with an unobstructed and close up view of the Eiffel Tower.

Every element was there to create a truly fabulous apartment in Paris with Sancerre. Our dream team got to work! Those “good bones” that we always look for were certainly there, but the project was a bit of a challenge as it required a complete remodel from the ground up. Let’s take a closer look at how the beautiful Sancerre was created!

Living Room: The Perfect Spot to Watch the Eiffel Tower Sparkle

AFTER: At home in Sancerre’s beautiful new living room.

The living room is the heart of the home and one of the best elements of the Sancerre’s location was how the space that is now the living room had such a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower thanks to the corner location. However, the space was quite limited when we viewed it and was more suitable for a dining area given the proximity and passageway leading to the kitchen.

BEFORE: The view we dreamed of capturing from the living room.

Yet, we knew there was so much more potential for this space! Pouring over the floor plan and walking through the space countless times, a new idea began to take shape. By moving the second bedroom into the space where the kitchen was located, we could remove the boxy second bedroom entirely and create a spacious open plan kitchen and dining area. This meant that our dream of creating a living room in the prime corner location would be possible.

BEFORE: Behind the pillar was an opening to the kitchen area on the right.

We could just imagine sitting in this space on a comfortable sofa and catching the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night while enjoying conversation with friends and family. By adding a wall between this space and the former kitchen area we created a beautiful new living room area that now truly is the heart of the home.

AFTER: The new living room with a glimpse to the new second bedroom.

The finished design is even more spectacular than we imagined! We love that the living room is set off at a slight angle that gives it a cozy feel while perfectly designed to enjoy the Eiffel Tower view too. And the view here really becomes part of the experience of being in the room with the large wall mirror behind the sofa. It so beautifully reflects the greenery in the summer and in the winter it’s a treat as it captures even more of the Eiffel Tower.

AFTER: Stylish swivel chair perfectly placed to turn to enjoy that very special view.

The delicate tones in the living room and the gorgeous pure linen soft gold curtains frame the view of the Eiffel Tower so naturally that you’ll find yourself admiring it from every window. Take a closer look and you’ll also spot the heating vents in the gorgeous new pale herringbone floors. The light yet warm color really adds to the bright and open look of the apartment and the vents are a lovely feature as it eliminates the need for bulky radiators. During the remodel we also added full central air, which is a rarity in Paris, and the vents are incorporated into the design along the ceiling. You’ll be comfortable in every season of the year at Sancerre!

AFTER: Look what’s behind the living room mirror!

That faceted mirror behind the sofa opens up the room even more and reflects the light and the view. And there’s even a little hidden secret there. The mirror was designed to hide the apartment’s fuse box from sight. We mean it when we say we think of every little detail!

Kitchen & Dining Area: Moving to a Spacious Open Plan Design

AFTER: View of the new open plan living room and dining area.

Our goal with the living spaces during the remodel was to make one grand space flooded with light where those classic Parisian views would be enjoyed every moment of the day. The final result is just perfect. The living room feels intimate and cozy yet the space flows so nicely. A long wall of French doors—five total—runs from the living room to dining area and kitchen. We love how the delicate diamond patterned wall paper subtly ties the entire space together. But that is certainly not how it began!

BEFORE: The small dining area and living room to the left.

The original living room and dining area was much smaller and the spaces were reversed. As you can see in the photo below, the wall with the sofa and the beautiful mirror are located now was previously an opening direct to the kitchen.

BEFORE: The original living room and dining area were much smaller.

In order to make room for an open plan kitchen and dining room, we had to first remove that grey wall in the photo above and create one large open space. The kitchen, which you can see down in the hallway, would move to this new space and the second bedroom would be tucked away in a quiet spot back where the kitchen was.

Over the years talking to our Paris Perfect Shared owners and many guests, we’ve learned that separate kitchen spaces aren’t enjoyed as much as open plan designs. It’s so much more pleasant to spend time together with family and friends while cooking. Pour a glass of wine and watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle while dinner cooks – it’s the simple pleasures! It’s also just so much more convenient to have the kitchen near the dining area.

AFTER: Modern kitchen and dining table at Sancerre.

We love the final result! Ann Huff created an integrated design where the kitchen with its sleek two-tone cabinets blends marvelously with the marble topped modern table. The perfect finishing touch is a gorgeous antique chandelier over the table.

AFTER: New kitchen is perfect for cooking at home.

There really is everything you need to cook at home in Sancerre’s new kitchen. With plenty of storage, dishwasher, built-in refrigerator, induction cook top, stove and microwave, it’s a kitchen that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

AFTER: New dining area with large French windows.

You could hardly find a more charming spot to enjoy dining at home in Paris than the Sancerre. With five sets of French windows along the dining area and living room, the space is flooded with light. And at night, pull the gold linen curtains and the space is enveloped in tranquility. Of course, you’ll find yourself peeking out at the Eiffel Tower if you do manage to close the curtains!

AFTER: The signature Hermès scarf.

One of the elements our owners love is the signature Hermès scarf that Ann uses as design inspiration for each Paris Perfect Shared apartment. Sancerre’s scarf is the “La Réale – Vue du Carrosse de la Galère” pattern that is a classic Hermès design first issued in 1953 and that has since been created in many colors. It features a ship that is now in the collection of the Musée National de la Marine in Paris. When Ann spotted it she had a vision that the entire apartment would revolve around the soft blue gray and gold colors. We love having the inspiration for the apartment so beautifully displayed in Sancerre. The framed Hermès scarf is a design statement in itself!

AFTER: New entrance to the master bedroom on the right.

At the far end of the open plan dining area with kitchen, an antique decorative mantle topped with a gorgeous antique mirror anchors the room and creates a beautiful focal point. The original floor plan had a hallway on the left leading to both bedrooms and the bathroom. Now the doorway on the left is for a guest powder room while a new doorway opened on the right leads to the master bedroom.

Master Bedroom: Adding an Ensuite Bathroom

AFTER: Serene master bedroom with full ensuite bathroom.

One of the most satisfying and surprising transformations at Sancerre was the master bedroom. The final result is a bright and peaceful room with soft grey floral wallpaper, Parisian inspired artwork, a full ensuite bathroom and even a built-in workspace. Quite an update from the original space, but let’s take a closer look at all the work that was done to create such a beautiful result.

BEFORE: Master bedroom before the renovation.

When purchased, the master bedroom at Sancerre was a peculiar shape. The one bathroom shared by both bedrooms cut a large chunk out of the room, which you can see in the photo above. It left a strange space at the far end that was really only suitable for closets.

BEFORE: The apartment’s original bathroom (LEFT) / Separate toilet (RIGHT).

However, with some creative rearranging of the bathrooms, we were able to create a bedroom with plenty of storage – and its own full ensuite bathroom. The apartment originally only had one bathroom that was split into a bathroom with a bathtub/ shower combo and sink and a separate powder room with toilet.

AFTER: Plenty of storage and powder room on the right.

Once the solution hit us it was quite obvious. By redesigning the master bedroom completely, we came up with a clever solution that would allow us to create two powder rooms where the original bathroom was located while at the same time creating more space in the bedroom. A guest powder room was created with access from the dining area and a new powder room with toilet and sink was added to the master bedroom.

AFTER: New powder room in the master bedroom.

The clever bit was adding a wall and creating a large bathroom with shower, sink and even room for a washer and dryer in that space that was once just an awkward closet. What a better use of space! And since there’s yet another huge French window, the bathroom is flooded with natural light.

AFTER: Ensuite master bathroom.

With its long sink and large shower with massive rainwater shower head, this bathroom is just a dream. Open the windows to the sights and sounds of Paris while you start your day.

AFTER: Ensuite bathroom with shower and washer/ dryer.

Taking such an awkward shaped room and turning it into a beautiful and also extremely functional bedroom and ensuite bathroom is an enormous satisfaction. We know every owner of Sancerre will enjoy these details and all the work that went into creating a welcoming and elegant home in Paris.

Second Bedroom: In a New Location with an Eiffel Tower View!

AFTER: A glimpse of the second bedroom at Sancerre.

Now it’s finally the moment to get a closer look at the beautiful new bedroom at Sancerre. It’s located to the right of the apartment entrance just past a antique gold framed mirror. After deciding to move the kitchen with the new open plan design, the entire area was gutted and prepared to create a new bedroom. Here’s a look at the space we started with when it was still a kitchen.

BEFORE: The kitchen when Sancerre was purchased.

This apartment did originally have two bedrooms, which was one of its many recommending features when we first saw it. However, there was only one bathroom for both bedrooms and we knew with the redesign it was a priority to create additional bathrooms as well. Since this space already structurally set up as a kitchen with water and drainage, it was possible to add a shower room ensuite to the second bedroom. When we redesign spaces we work to create beautiful as well as comfortable living spaces – always a struggle in historic Parisian buildings. But we love the challenge!

BEFORE: The original second bedroom.

By knocking down the wall and opening up the original second bedroom, we were able to create a much larger living space while also creating a new second bedroom with an ensuite shower room. Remember that old kitchen? You certainly won’t recognize it now!

AFTER: Gorgeous new second bedroom.

The bed is placed in a little nook and soft gold curtains set the scene. Unique built-in shelves on either side of the bed create storage while the wallpaper adds a touch of whimsy. A floor to ceiling French window opens to an ornate iron railing – again so very Parisian. And the best part? Sit back and relax in bed while enjoying a perfectly framed view of La Grande Dame!

AFTER: Enjoy this stunning Eiffel Tower view from bed.

Now just imagine waking up to that view! It’s even more magical when the lights dance across the Eiffel Tower every hour on the hour after dark. You might just have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming!

AFTER: New ensuite bathroom with shower and sink.

In the new second bedroom there’s now a beautiful new bathroom with dark marble and geometric tiling on the floor. The large shower has a rainwater shower head and there’s plenty of storage in the bathroom.

AFTER: Luxurious marble and tile details in ensuite bathroom.

One feature we especially enjoy about the new floor plan of Sancerre is the privacy since the bedrooms are located on opposite sides of the apartment instead of side by side sharing a bathroom. The space is much more comfortable, especially with a few more special additions that we made during the renovation.

Bonus: Details to Make You Feel at Home in Paris

AFTER: The new guest powder room.

Whether its completely redesigning an apartment to add bathrooms and more comfortable living spaces or searching for the perfect antique decorative elements, every single detail in our Paris Perfect Shared apartments is selected to help our owners feel at home in Paris.

AFTER: Antique details at Sancerre.

At Sancerre, you’ll find beautiful antique furniture, chandeliers, mirrors and artwork throughout the apartment. Under Ann’s expert eye everything comes together perfectly.

AFTER: Work space in the master bedroom.

As many of our owners have the ability to work from any location or are semi-retired, having a work space in the apartment is always a priority. The master bedroom has a built-in desk that’s great for those zoom calls, catching up with a bit of work or simply video calling with family. We’ve thought of all the details so you can simply arrive and feel right at home.

Cabernet

A picture-perfect view of the Eiffel Tower from Cabernet.

Our Cabernet apartment has welcomed so many happy guests—many of them returning time and again—and has always been a favorite for its impeccable Eiffel Tower view, long balcony set above the tree tops and comfortable style. Yet even our most popular Paris apartments sometimes need updating. Often that’s a bit of redecorating or adding beautiful chandelier found at an antique market, but other times it means a complete renovation and redesign. For our one-bedroom Cabernet apartment, it was time for a total transformation! Come along and take a look at the incredible new look at Cabernet.

Guests rave about the dreamy view of the Eiffel Tower from Cabernet’s balcony.

TIME FOR AN UPDATE AT CABERNET

To update or not to update a guest favorite apartment – that is the question! Creating comfortable spaces for our guests is a top priority in our vacation rentals. While styles and tastes change, sometimes it is just time for a major remodel and update. Even with more than 20 years of experience remodeling and decorating apartments in Paris, we are always still surprised at how we can sometimes look at a familiar space and see a completely different—and often better—design. That is exactly what happened with Cabernet!

Upon entering the apartment there was a kitchen immediately to the right, followed by a bathroom with the apartment’s only toilet (there was a second bathroom en suite to the bedroom but without a toilet) and then a hallway leading to the living room and dining area.

BEFORE: Entrance on lower right with the kitchen and bathroom.

The major “aha!” moment with Cabernet was that by moving the kitchen to the large open-plan living room and dining area, we could completely redesign the former kitchen area into two larger and more comfortable bathrooms – adding a second toilet in the en suite bathroom as well. Redesigning the entrance to the bedroom allowed us to rearrange the space and include significantly more storage as well.

AFTER: Moving the kitchen and redesigning the bathrooms – a major update!

Now that you’ve had a glimpse of the footprint changes on the floor plans, come along and take a look at the dramatic before and after transformation of Cabernet. You won’t believe how different it looks!

LIVING ROOM: MOVING TO AN OPEN-PLAN DESIGN

Cabernet

AFTER: The bright and welcoming new open-plan living room at Cabernet.

When you step into Cabernet’s living room, the room is full of light from the two large French doors that open to a long balcony overlooking the tree tops. This room is just magic every moment of the day and night as the Eiffel Tower soars into view. So the idea of moving the kitchen to the far end of this room was a natural choice. Now you can start your day with coffee and step out to a bistro table on the balcony or enjoy meals at the table with a view of the Eiffel Tower. While that was possible before, it’s far more convenient having the kitchen nearby rather than down the hallway.

BEFORE: The living room before the remodel.

Shifting to an open-plan design and adding a kitchen to the far wall of the living room meant completely rearranging the layout of the room. Before the remodel, the sofa was along the far wall where the kitchen would need to be added. But by bringing the sofa to the middle of the room, we were able to create a living area around the beautiful original marble fireplace and place the dining table near the kitchen – thus dividing the room into two functional areas.

BEFORE: Cozy colors and soft styling.

The colors and design of Cabernet before the remodel were warm and romantic, but we knew the space could be brighter and feel more connected to the beautiful Parisian architecture and style that fills the space through the open French doors. With a blend of antique elements and modern styling, we love how the new living room continues to feel welcoming and comfortable but with a decidedly more modern Parisian style.

AFTER: A space perfectly designed for enjoying Parisian living.

Of course, it’s all in the details. Take a look at the gorgeous new herringbone parquet flooring in a warm honey color and the traditional paneling added to the walls of the living room. These are the elements that set the scene and create a clean and defined design that you might miss on first glance. Now the living room is a welcoming space for our guests to enjoy every moment of their stay – from breakfast with an unforgettable view to relaxing on the sofa at night watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle.

A NEW KITCHEN FOR CABERNET

BEFORE: The separate kitchen at Cabernet.

While the compact kitchen at Cabernet was well designed and had everything needed, counter space was limited and there was only a two-burner induction stovetop. As it was located down the hall from the dining table in the living room, it meant a lot of walking back and forth for serving and cleaning up meals. Plus, everyone just wants to be in the living room as that’s where you get to enjoy the prime Paris views. So, needless to say, we think the new kitchen at Cabernet is a marvelous update!

AFTER: A built-in kitchen along the wall of the living room.

We love the clever design of the kitchen and how the mirrored backsplash continues up behind the built-in shelves. The kitchen has plenty of storage, which meant these shelves could be used more for decoration rather than storage. This styling and the gold accents ties the kitchen in so beautifully with the design of the entire living room – striking that perfect balance of creating a sense of harmony in the space while also having two clearly defined areas.

AFTER: Gorgeous new artwork in Cabernet.

While most of the Cabernet’s decor was updated, we love how certain elements just feel too connected to a space to change. The large antique mirror above the fireplace was at home in this apartment and was left exactly as it was in the new design. However, it was balanced by an antique chandelier above the dinging table that is reflected in the fireplace mirror and all the new mirrors in the kitchen. Book-ending the room with mirrors was just another way to create a brighter and more unified design to the new open-plan living room. We love the final result!

REDESIGNING THE BEDROOM

AFTER: A new entrance to the bedroom and en suite bathroom.

If you enjoy pouring over floor plans like we do, you may have spotted that the key to redesigning the bedroom at Cabernet came from the important shift of the entrance from the far end of the room to closer to the center. Here’s where the bedroom started before the remodel, which already was a cozy and inviting space.

BEFORE: Bedroom at Cabernet before the remodel.

By moving the doorway to the bedroom, we were able to swap around which wall the bed was located on and create a roomier access to the en suite bathroom, which in the original design was convenient but on the small side. By placing the bed on the opposite wall, the room now feels more spacious and harmonious.

AFTER: Hardly feels like the same space!

There are moments in each apartment remodel, especially when we revisit beloved spaces like Cabernet, where we just have to stand back and marvel at how these spaces continue to evolve and change. Just like your home, updates are exciting but it’s also fun to remember how much we enjoyed earlier designs as well.

AFTER: Beautiful new decor in the Cabernet bedroom.

Beautifully patterned wallpaper, modern wall-mounted lighting and clean lines create a bright and charming space where you’ll look forward to relaxing during your stay in Paris. Plus, with the new design we were able to add large built-in closets for plenty of storage.

CREATING TWO LARGE BATHROOMS

BEFORE: En suite bathroom with shower before remodel.

After the dramatically beautiful new kitchen, the bathrooms at the Cabernet were the second biggest area to change. And perhaps the most exciting! This apartment was always popular with guests in part because it offered two bathrooms, which means it can sleep up to 4 guests. However, with only one toilet located in the second bathroom (originally near the kitchen), it wasn’t as convenient of a layout as possible. Now with all the extra space from the kitchen, we had a lot of room to work with. A designer’s dream!

BEFORE: Second bathroom with shower before remodel.

We started by knocking through the kitchen wall and essentially using half the space of the kitchen for the newly expanded en suite bathroom. At the far end of the en suite, you’ll now see the window that was above the sink in the kitchen. Look at the beautiful new light and space!

AFTER: En suite now incorporates the previous kitchen space – plus the kitchen window!

By opening the space we were able to include a large walk-in shower and finally add a toilet to the en suite bathroom. Large mirrors, beautiful marble tiles and plenty of storage under the sink were the perfect finishing touches.

AFTER: Second bathroom is located off the entrance.

Then we moved on to redesigning the second bathroom, which was also expanded from the remaining part of the kitchen. That meant another spacious walk-in shower, large sink and the same fine design elements.

AFTER: Second bathroom located near the living room.

After the latest renovation, the Cabernet now has two full and independent bathrooms, which truly makes this space ideal for a small family or two couples thanks to the comfortable sofa bed in the living room.

ELEGANT ENTRANCE HALLWAY

AFTER: Beautiful new entryway decor leading to living room.

When you first step into your Paris apartment rental, we want you to feel drawn into a beautiful space that makes you feel at home from the moment you arrive. For Cabernet, we continued the elegant wall paneling from the living room and added a gorgeous floral wallpaper design to the area. The antique entryway table and large mirror draws the eye in to the living room. There was even space for a grand update with the addition of a full size washer and separate dryer.

ENJOY THE NEW CABERNET!

Hermès Scarves

Our Conti apartment featuring a vintage Hermès scarf that inspired the decor.

Decorating apartments in Paris is one of our greatest passions, and is one that involves many details – and often many hands. Over 12 years ago, we began a wonderful friendship with the talented designer Ann Huff, who worked with us on the design of several of our Paris Perfect vacation rentals and with Paris Perfect Shared, our fractional co-ownership program. Together with Madelyn, Paris Perfect founder, it’s the dream team that adds the perfect finishing touches our guests and owners love.

While every detail is perfection, there’s one element that has become a much-loved feature in our Paris Perfect Shared properties. This is the signature Hermès scarves that have simultaneously inspired and become an integral part of the decor for each apartment. While you might just think of scarves for wearing, they can also add a beautiful touch to your home. For the story behind how we started decorating with vintage scarves, we sat down with Madelyn and Ann to chat more about this unique design inspiration, tips for shopping for scarves in Paris and more!

Madelyn Byrne and Ann Huff

Ann (left) and Madelyn (right) – a friendship that started with a love for Paris and design.

Where did the idea for using vintages scarves as the symbol for our Paris Perfect Shared fractional apartments begin?

Ann: It’s interesting how it all started. Maddy and I come at things a bit differently and she always approaches things from the history and loves the history behind the scarves. I approach things more visually, and so often I will be shopping for antiques in markets and will come across scarves where the colors really speak to me. I’ll bring those out and look at them and then Maddy, if she’s with me, will often recognize them and dives right into the history behind the designs. It’s great!

Maddy: One of the first vintage Hermès scarves was in the Cairanne fractional apartment where it makes a beautiful statement above the bed. It’s the Bride de Cour pattern designed by Françoise de la Perriere, which was first released in 1969. I love how the signature equestrian accessories have been stylized into a beautiful decorative pattern. You paired the intricate designs from the scarf beautifully with gold sconces on each side. That was when we saw how a signature scarf influenced the elements and really tied the room design together. And it was a success immediately! The owners loved it and it very quickly became a signature for Paris Perfect Shared. Now we couldn’t imagine designing one of our fractional apartments for sale without this design element – our owners are always anxious to see the Hermès scarf that inspired their apartment!

Hermès Scarves

The elegant Hermès scarf in the Cairanne bedroom.

Ann: Yes and after Cairanne there was Conti, where the scarf definitely drove the design. The pattern of that scarf really caught my eye with its striking black, white and gold designs that are just so beautiful. Of course, Maddy went nuts over it because the historical pattern and themes and I went nuts over the design and planned the entire apartment around those colors. Looking closer at Conti, if you notice the tassels in the design on the scarf, that drove the design of the sconces on either side of the fireplace mantle in the living room, which have tassels on them. And the same with the black shades, they were inspired by the distinctive black from the scarf. Cairanne and Conti were really the beginning of the scarves.

Hermès Scarves

Maddy: Yes, and those two scarves have so much history for Hermès in their designs. The beautiful scarf in Conti is the iconic Memoire d’Hermès with a design by Caty Latham that pays homage to Hermès founder Thierry Hermès. In the center you’ll spot a portrait of him surrounded by objet d’art that have come to represent Hermès. Latham created many iconic designs for Hermès including much of the equestrian series, the Egypt series, and designs with keys and tassels.

What part does a signature piece likes a vintage scarf play in creating a theme or feel for an apartment? And which comes first – the scarf or the room design?

Ann: It’s funny and I’m sure Maddy will agree with this. We probably look at hundreds of scarves every year at least. Because we look at them in every market that we go to – and we go to a lot of markets. Out of hundreds we probably pick out like three that we like. So it’s really a very selective and intuitive feeling—when you see the right one you know—and you know okay that’s what the apartment is going to look like.

After the experience with Conti, some of the scarves that we found drove the decisions for the colors and the tone for the apartment. Very rarely do we have the opposite happen where we’re excited to find a scarf that will match the décor that we’ve found. I would say that in the apartments that we’ve done—Conti and Armagnac and Syrah—all the designs were driven by finding a scarf and that “aha” moment when we found the right one.

With Vivant, we had an “aha” moment with the scarf, which was so beautiful with its gold and pale pink colors. But when we got it in there we decided that probably it would be better to play off of it but to keep it a little more subtle, so we put it in the hallway. Interestingly enough, our latest Paris Perfect Shared apartment project is the first and only one so far where we’re doing the opposite. With this one, the design got driven first and then we had to set out to find the right scarf. And that’s been really fun!

Hermès Scarves

Keys are the perfect symbol to welcome you to your very own Paris apartment!

So far, you’ve featured only Hermès scarves. What makes these scarves so special?

Madelyn: Hermès is the gold standard of scarves. The are among the most cherished scarves in the world, the most interesting from a design perspective and, of course, a historical perspective. This is why the Hermès scarves are the perfect signature for our fractional apartments in Paris. They are the best of the best, they stand the test of time. The is the whole philosophy of how we operate, how Ann decorates, how we remodel – to create something that stands the test of time. That has always been our philosophy and one of the elements we love is how perfectly this has become the calling card for our fractional apartments.

Ann: Hermès is iconically French – it just oozes French style. The quality, the history, the patterns are everything that embodies French artisan design. The patterns are also full of symbols that resonate for the fractional apartments in Paris. The scarf for Vivant is the iconic Les Clefs design by Caty Latham that was first released in 1965. With all the keys, I thought that was really meaningful for Paris Perfect Shared. You’re going to get your keys to your own apartment in Paris! And that pattern is also a pretty popular design. Some were really famous and were done in multiple colors and some have notable designers and are signed – those are real collector items.

The one that we’re putting in the fractional apartment we’re currently decorating is the oldest scarf, I believe from the 1960s. It’s actually quite fragile and the framer has to be really careful framing it. It’s exciting. Our framer always gets really excited about the scarves that we bring in and we always talk about them – they’re like our friends.

That brings up a good question: to frame or not to frame? Any suggestions for framing a vintage scarf?

Ann: First of all, I think it’s very interesting that the scarves are never square. While you might think they’re square, they’re actually not quite square – usually they’re off by about a half an inch. Make sure your framer measures it really carefully in order to get it right. The framer has to be super careful about how they do it. This is where you’ll want to do your research and find an experienced framer. Our framer does batting underneath the scarf, that is, a layer of batting and then she puts the scarf over it.

At the Syrah the Hermès scarf has been framed without glass.

Just recently we’re starting to frame them without glass on top, because you don’t really need glass. They are pretty color safe and I prefer them without because then you don’t get the glare and they’re also lighter. They do end up getting really heavy with the glass, so I’m excited for this transition. The first one we did without glass was for the Syrah apartment and we’re doing another one without glass for the project we’re working on right now. All you have to do is gently dust it every once in a while with a feather duster.

The other tip is for cleaning and preparing your scarf – to wear or hang. First of all, when you take them to the dry cleaner, make sure that you tell them to write down on the receipt that it’s an Hermès scarf and what it is of because dry cleaners have been known to swap them out with other scarves. The other thing is to make sure that they know—especially in the US—not to iron the edges, because the edges are hand rolled and hand stitched. You want them to be rolled and ironing will flatten them down and destroy them forever.

Can you share some tips for buying vintage scarves? How do you know if you’ve found a real Hermès scarf at a market?

Ann: The most important thing is that hand rolling we mentioned. You’ll want to look closely since it’s always rolled toward the front and is hand stitched. The telltale is the feel of the silk and the signature. There’s always a Hermès signature and it has to be spelled correctly. That sounds so obvious, but a lot of them don’t have the grave accent over the second e and you know automatically that it’s a fake if they don’t.

But the feel is distinctive and just takes some experience. For instance, I bought a bunch of scarves one time at a market and I was in a hurry. I bought five at the same time. I just knew I liked them all so I took them. When I got home and was unpacking and folding them to put them away, I picked one up and immediately could tell that it was a fake. I could just tell by the feel – it didn’t have the same feel as the other ones. And then I washed it just to see what would happen and it completely bled and I knew. You make mistakes, but that’s how you learn too.

Look for the correct accent on Hermès and the rolled edge details.

Madelyn: After identifying that you’re looking at an authentic Hermès scarf, you’ll have to look for the designs that speak to you – the ones that grab your attention. And here is also where Hermès designs are so special. They choose designers for their seasonal scarves, and each one is full of symbols and has a story that adds to the richness of the design. This is what made it so cool when Ann thought, hey this could be a great base for designing a whole apartment around, because they are truly works of art.

It’s very rare to have fashion pieces that gain in value like that over the years. Some of them are so sought after by collectors that they are impossible to find. For instance, I’ve been looking for a Pont Neuf scarf for years. I’ve got it on watch at different auction houses, but none ever come up. Some scarves are so popular that they sell out and you never see them again. The limited edition aspect really adds to the cherished aspect of them. Once they do a scarf they rarely repeat it and when they do it means it’s one of their iconic patterns.

Where do you hunt for your vintage scarves and décor in Paris?

Ann: The flea market Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen has three or four vintage shops and some of them are kind of hidden while others are well known. There’s one or two in Paul Bert Serpette, but if you walk along Vernissage—that’s the part of the flea market with all the little alleys where it’s easy to get lost—you may come across some people who may just have five or six of them. I think those are just as much fun to look through as the piles and piles that you can find elsewhere. You just never know when you’re going to come across that little jewel that you have to have.

In the 7th arrondissement there are a few shops, including CORNER LUXE at 45 avenue Bosquet, where I bought one scarf recently. That’s a great spot right in the center of Paris.

Madelyn: Yes, the flea market is a must if you’re shopping for vintage Hermès scarves. You can also check out the popular consignment stores around Paris. There are also many excellent vintage shops in Paris.

Next stop … Florence with Italy Perfect Shared!

Now that the Shared experience is moving to Italy, have you thought about what the design symbol might be for Italy?

Madelyn: We’re very excited about expanding our successful fractional co-ownership program to Italy. Our first stop is Florence—the birthplace of the Renaissance and one of Italy’s most beautiful cities—and the properties are going to be extraordinary. Ann: We’re still developing ideas, but one thing we will be doing in most, if not all, the Italy fractional apartments is that we’re having some beautiful chandeliers made that are a combination of wood, crystal and metal. They’re very Italian and really pretty. They’re handmade and I’m really excited about them.
