Paris Christmas Markets

This year there will be festive markets scattered across the city, each one offering its own charm along with handcrafted gifts, regional delicacies and warming cups of vin chaud.

  • La Défense Christmas Village – November 13 to December 28, 2025
We love visiting this market for its impressive size and festive energy. With more than 150 chalets set beneath the modern skyline of La Défense, it’s the largest in Paris and perfect for finding regional specialties and handmade gifts.
  • Tuileries Garden Christmas Market – November 14, 2025 to January 4, 2026)

The aroma of roasted chestnuts fills the air, and the views of the gardens and museum lights at dusk make it pure Parisian magic.
  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market – November 25, 2025 to January 1, 2026
Small but full of charm, this market feels like stepping into a Paris postcard. Nestled among elegant boutiques and cafés, it’s the perfect stop for anyone staying on the Left Bank. We love to browse the stalls, then warm up with coffee or chocolat chaud at Café de Flore or Les Deux Magots nearby.
  • Notre-Dame Christmas Market – November 28 to December 25, 2025
Set in the charming Square René Viviani just across from Notre-Dame, this market focuses on French craftsmanship, regional delicacies and festive entertainment. The setting—with views of the cathedral and the Seine—makes it one of the most picturesque holiday markets in the city.

Paris autumn walks

Autumn is one of the loveliest seasons for strolling in Paris, when golden leaves and soft sunlight seem to turn each walk into a small work of art. It truly is the time of the year to slow down, take a detour and follow your inner flâneur or flâneuse. We’ve drawn together five walks to capture that spirit, each blending Paris’s art, history and natural beauty into a scene worthy of an Impressionist canvas.

Think of them as inspiration for how to spend a day—or just a few golden hours—in Paris. Depending on how often you choose to stop for a museum visit, a little shopping or a café to warm up, each walk can stretch or shorten as you wish. Along the way, we’ve included some of our favorite spots that will add an artistic touch to your autumn strolls.

1. Royal Gardens from the Palais Royal to the Tuileries

There’s no better place to begin than in the Jardin du Palais Royal, one of Paris’s most elegant gardens. Once the private domain of Cardinal Richelieu and later the royal family, it’s now a tranquil haven where the clipped trees form quiet allées all surrounded by arcades. In autumn, the garden seems to glow from within as the leaves turn honey-gold.

Then, it’s only a short walk along Rue de Rivoli leads to another royal masterpiece, the Jardin des Tuileries, stretching grandly between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde. Designed in the 16th century for Catherine de’ Medici, it became the first public park in Paris. It’s the perfect place for strolling and admiring the changing seasons. Find a green chair beside one of the fountains, watch the wind scatter leaves across the water and you’ll understand why so many artists tried to capture this light.

When the air turns crisp, wander toward the far end of the gardens and head to the Musée de l’Orangerie, one of Paris’s small museum gems. Beyond Monet’s luminous Water Lilies, you’ll find a beautifully curated collection of Impressionist and early 20th-century masterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse and Modigliani.

Or, for even more art—and an inspired place to pause for lunch—cross the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor footbridge over the Seine to the Musée d’Orsay on the Left Bank. The walk between the two is one of the most romantic in Paris in any season. Inside, the museum’s glass roof fills the galleries with soft light, the perfect setting for its world-renowned Impressionist collection. If you’re visiting the museum, stay for lunch at its elegant restaurant, where chandeliers and gilded ceilings recall its Belle Époque past, or enjoy a more casual meal or coffee in Café Campana, set behind the great clock with a view that feels like stepping into a painting.

Watch leaves flutter into the Seine along the Île Saint-Louis.

2. Île Saint-Louis and Île de la Cité – A Literary and Painterly Reverie

Begin your stroll on Île Saint-Louis, one of the most charming places in Paris. The island’s quiet streets and elegant façades have inspired writers and dreamers alike. Even Charles Swann, in Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, lived here on Quai d’Orléans overlooking the Seine. The quays that encircle the island are especially beautiful in autumn, when the chestnut trees turn amber and their reflections ripple across the Seine. If you can pull yourself away from the riverside views, be sure to visit Saint-Louis-en-l’Île Church, a baroque treasure located in the heart of the island with a gilded interior that glows with warmth on a cool day.

Then cross the Pont Saint-Louis to reach Île de la Cité, pausing midway to listen to the musicians that often play here, with Notre-Dame just ahead. Wander through the cathedral’s square and visit to see its recently restored splendor before following the river toward Pont au Double. Just across this bridge, Square René Viviani bursts with autumn color, its trees framing the bell tower of the Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre church. This is the ideal moment to stop in Shakespeare & Company, the legendary English-language bookshop, or settle into its cozy café next door for a coffee with a view of Notre-Dame. It’s one of the most atmospheric corners in Paris!

As the afternoon light softens, return to the island and stroll beneath the graceful weeping willows in the Square du Vert-Galant, at the very tip of the Île de la Cité, where the water flows around you on both sides. End your walk in Place Dauphine, one of the most romantic squares in Paris, with its chestnut trees scattering golden leaves over cobblestones and café tables. For those dreaming of staying longer, our La Place Dauphine apartments overlook this very scene and are the perfect place to enjoy Paris in the fall.

Montmartre autumn walks

Montmartre transforms into a painting in the fall.

3. An Autumn Walk in Montmartre

There’s something especially artistic about Montmartre in the autumn. We suggest starting your walk in the peaceful little park behind Sacré-Cœur. It’s a little garden with a big name—Parc Marcel Bleustein Blanchet dit Parc de la Turlure—which is a popular spot for wisteria watchers in the spring. But it’s equally as lovely in the fall with autumn-tinged vines and benches with superbly framed views of the Basilica. From there, follow the cobblestone lanes downhill toward the Clos Montmartre, a little vineyard that still produces wine. In autumn, the vines turn deep shades of red and gold, creating a rare rural view right in the middle of Montmartre.

Continue along narrow streets past the historic La Maison Rose to the Musée de Montmartre, where Renoir once lived and painted The Swing and The Ball at the Moulin de la Galette, and where later Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo lived and worked. Warm up with a cup of tea from the museum cafe overlooking the gardens, and you can imagine the scenes they captured here with that distinctive Montmartre light. Enjoy this glimpse inside the Musée de Montmartre and a surprising connection to a the very special Rose de Loire vacation rental with Maddy:

While in Montmartre, you won’t want to miss strolling through Place du Tertre where artists set up their easels and sell their artwork beneath the trees. The mix of autumn colors and creativity makes this one of the most enjoyable times to visit. If you want to dive even deeper into Montmartre’s fascinating history and hidden corners, book a Montmartre Walking Tour led by an expert local guide to learn about the artists, writers and characters who shaped it.

4. Jardin des Plantes – A Nature Break in the Latin Quarter

For a quieter side of Paris in autumn, spend some time wandering through the Jardin des Plantes in the Latin Quarter. Established in the 17th century as a royal garden for medicinal plants, it has long been a place where Parisians come to stroll and breathe a little deeper. In autumn, the wide allées are lined with plane and chestnut trees that glow gold and russet in the afternoon light and the air is full of the scent of fallen leaves.

Follow the main avenue toward the grand glasshouses that are full of palms and tropical plants. The flowerbeds and arboretum create a tapestry of textures and tones, shifting from green to bronze as the seasons change. It’s a beautiful spot for a quiet morning walk, though the gardens are just as enchanting later in the day when the light begins to fade and the pathways have the perfect painterly glow.

Take a break from art museums and visit the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle to see the grand Galerie de l’Évolution, a soaring space filled with displays of animals, fossils and marine life beneath a glass roof. Whether you spend time seeing the exhibits or simply find a quiet corner in the park to enjoy the autumn colors, the Jardin des Plantes offers a refreshing place to pause.

Parc Monceau autumn Paris walk

Parc Monceau is like a painting come to life!

5. Elegance & Autumn Colors in Parc Monceau

If Paris has a park made for autumn, it’s Parc Monceau. Located in the 8th arrondissement, this romantic garden feels more like a private world than a public park. Curving paths wind past Corinthian columns, classical statues and a small pond where the trees reflect like brushstrokes on the water. Designed in the 18th century for the Duke of Chartres, the park was meant to surprise and delight – and it still does!

This is where Claude Monet came to paint again and again, fascinated by the way sunlight dappled through the trees. Writers such as Marcel Proust and Guy de Maupassant also lived nearby and found inspiration in its beauty. You can read even more about the artistic side of Parc Monceau here. It’s a peaceful place to pause and watch local life unfold with Parisians walking their dogs, reading on benches or simply enjoying the golden light.

When you’re ready to explore more, head to the Musée Cernuschi, set right on the edge of the park, to admire its remarkable collection of Asian art. The neighboring Musée Nissim de Camondo, a beautifully preserved mansion from the early 20th century, is currently closed for restoration but will reopen in 2027 after a careful renewal. End your walk at the elegant Musée Jacquemart-André just a short stroll away, where you can enjoy lunch or tea in the museum’s glass-roofed café – one of the loveliest spots in Paris to while away an autumn afternoon.

Plan the perfect autumn stay in Paris!

Make the Most of Autumn in Paris

Fête des Vendanges

Every autumn, Montmartre turns into one of the most joyful places in Paris as the neighborhood gathers to celebrate its wine harvest festival. The Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre is a five-day event that blends culture, community and history in one of the city’s most iconic and creative districts. In 2025, the 92nd edition will take place from October 8th to 12th, and it promises to be especially vibrant.

This year’s theme is all about youth – not just in age, but in spirit. From energetic performances and street parades to artistic workshops and culinary tastings, the festival invites everyone to celebrate what it means to stay curious, creative and connected across generations. Whether you’re 7 or 77, a lifelong Parisian or a visitor for the day, you’re invited to join in this fun event.

While the Fête des Vendanges is full of life and creativity today, it’s also deeply rooted in tradition. Wine production in Montmartre dates back to the 12th century, when the nuns of the Montmartre Abbey first planted vines on the hill. At one point, nearly three-quarters of the Butte was covered in vineyards. They disappeared in the 1920s, only to be revived in 1933 thanks to a group of passionate locals determined to preserve Montmartre’s spirit and protect it from real estate development.

Since then, the Clos Montmartre vineyard, cared for year-round by the City of Paris and the COFAS association, has produced a limited batch of wine each year. The proceeds go to local social programs and the tradition lives on, making this festival one of Paris’s most meaningful and community-driven celebrations.

What to Expect at the 2025 Fête des Vendanges

For five full days, the 18th arrondissement will come alive with a wide range of events.

  • The Grand Parade:
A favorite moment of the festival, the Grand Parade fills the streets with music, dancing, costumes and colorful performances. Locals and artists from around the world join together in celebration, reflecting Montmartre’s diverse and inclusive spirit.
  • The Taste Trail:
Running from Friday, October 10th through Sunday, October 12th, this open-air culinary experience invites food lovers to explore the flavors of France at stalls around the base of Sacré-Cœur. Sample wine, cheese, pastries and regional specialties while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
  • Guided Tours of the Clos Montmartre Vineyard:
Go behind the gates of Paris’s last remaining vineyard with a guided tour led by historian Jean-Manuel Gabert. These rare and fascinating visits tell the story of Montmartre’s winemaking tradition and the vines that still grow on the Butte today. These tours require advance reservations, which will open soon. Spots fill up quickly, so be sure to check the official schedule and book early.
  • Live Shows, Exhibitions, and Workshops:
Throughout the district, you’ll find free concerts, open-air performances, art installations and hands-on activities for all ages. Most events are free and open to the public, though a few select activities may require advance booking or special access.

It’s where we love to wander, shop, linger over long lunches and enjoy the lived-in charm that makes the Marais one of the most popular neighborhoods of Paris.

The Marais really has it all: historic mansions, secret gardens, cozy cafés, creative concept stores and a food scene that rivals any arrondissement in Paris. And when you stay in one of our carefully curated Paris Perfect vacation rentals in the Marais, you’ll experience it all like a true local, just steps from your front door.

History Around Every Corner

The Marais is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Paris, and it shows in the best way possible. Every winding street feels like a story, and there’s so much beautifully preserved architecture. Take a stroll past grand hôtels particuliers (former aristocratic mansions), many of which now house some of the city’s most captivating museums. Favorites include the Musée Carnavalet dedicated to the history of Paris, the Musée National Picasso and the unique Maison de Victor Hugo.

The Musée Picasso is one of the artistic gems of Paris.

Don’t miss a walk through Place des Vosges, Paris’s oldest planned square. Surrounded by elegant arcades and tucked-away art galleries, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and soak it all in. While you’re there, pop into Carette for a sampling of macarons or a velvety hot chocolate. Yes, it can be a little touristy, but the treats (especially their chouquettes) and views are worth every sip and bite.

This neighborhood once belonged to the aristocracy, and you can still feel that old-world charm in its peaceful courtyards and refined façades, even as it hums with the energy of modern-day Paris.

Marais museums

Walk through the history of Paris at the Musée Carnavalet.

To dive deeper into the rich architectural and cultural tapestry of the Marais, plan a guided walking tour led by a local expert. You’ll uncover centuries of history through landmarks like the Hôtel de Soubise, Hôtel de Sens, Hôtel de Donon and, of course, Place des Vosges. It’s a wonderful way to explore the area’s evolution from aristocratic enclave to one of the city’s most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods.

Marais shopping

Boutique Shopping & Parisian Style

Start on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois for a stylish mix of everyday French labels and upscale boutiques. Then weave your way through Rue Vieille du Temple and Rue des Rosiers, where you’ll find everything from vintage gems to cult-favorite concept stores. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:

  • Le Bijou Parisien: A fresh, design-forward brand inspired by urban life and the metro stations of Paris. Their sleek pieces are as cool as they are collectible.
  • Fragonard: This family-run perfume house has been crafting beautiful fragrances in Grasse since 1926. Alongside their signature scents, you’ll find colorful home goods and the prettiest pillowcases that are perfect gifts for yourself or someone back home.
  • Merci: No trip to the Marais is complete without a stop at this iconic concept store. It’s a treasure trove of curated fashion, home decor and accessories with a café tucked inside and its Insta-famous red Fiat parked out front.

Foodie Favorites

The Marais is a haven for food lovers, where it seems every corner has a tempting café, creative bakery or time-tested bistro. Start your day with a baguette or flaky pastry from a local boulangerie and settle in at a café for some classic Paris people-watching.

One can’t-miss stop is the Marché des Enfants-Rouges, Paris’s oldest covered market. Inside, you’ll find everything from Japanese bento boxes to Moroccan tagines and fresh organic crêpes. Keep an eye out near the entrance for the local artist who creates whimsical sculptures out of old books. He’s a longtime neighborhood fixture, and his work is one-of-a-kind. Just outside, you’ll often find pop-up brocantes (flea markets) perfect for treasure hunting.

Marais food markets

Shop at the Marché des Enfants-Rouges.

Hungry yet? Here are a few of our favorite neighborhood spots:

  • Brigat Paris: A stylish, modern boulangerie serving exceptional loaves. The brioche feuilletée is a must, and while the baguettes are delicious, it’s the specialty breads that truly shine.
  • Le Trumilou: Looking for an authentic Parisian bistro with a local vibe? Head here. It’s cozy, unfussy and reliably delicious. Just the way we like it!
  • Le Carreau: A warm, welcoming bistro with a “fait maison” (house-made) philosophy. Their team works with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to create a menu that fuses French classics with Asian influences. The natural wine and craft cocktail list is just as thoughtful as the food, and the friendly staff make you feel right at home.

Notre Dame

On April 15, 2019, the world held its breath as flames engulfed the roof of Notre Dame Cathedral. Gasps of disbelief echoed globally when Viollet-le-Duc’s iconic spire collapsed into the nave – a moment of profound loss etched into history. Yet, this was not the first time fire had ravaged the great 12th-century cathedral, which has endured centuries of trials and transformations.

If you’ve explored cathedrals across Europe—some now lying in ruins—you’ll know that fires are an all-too-common hazard. Grand timber roofs and countless candles have always posed a risky combination. Located right in the heart of Paris, Notre Dame has faced its share of peril, both from flames and historical upheaval. From near destruction during the French Revolution to sweeping 19th-century restorations, the cathedral has weathered centuries of change, standing as a resilient symbol of Parisian heritage.

If you’ve visited Paris in recent years, you may have marveled at the awe-inspiring restoration project underway at Notre Dame. It was fascinating to walk around the site, read about the meticulous restoration process, and gaze up at the scaffolding towering all the way up to the brand-new spire.

During the restoration in January 2024 with scaffolding to the very tip top of the new spire.

The decision to use traditional building techniques from centuries past brought unique challenges, requiring immense skill and precision. Over 2,000 builders, artisans and art restorers from across France collaborated on this monumental effort. Slowly but surely, life returned to Our Lady of Paris as the cathedral was painstakingly restored to its former glory.

A post shared by Emmanuel Macron (@emmanuelmacron)

As the long-awaited reopening day approaches, it’s heartwarming to see the first official celebration honoring the very people who brought Notre Dame back to life – a restoration President Emmanuel Macron has called “the project of the century.” In the video above, the cathedral’s nave is filled with the skilled artisans, builders and restorers who worked tirelessly to revive its historic splendor. On December 7th and 8th, the world’s eyes will once again turn to Paris as Notre Dame, with its gleaming interior, reopens to the public after five years of meticulous restoration.

This is Paris’s Gothic cathedral as it has never been seen before. During the intense restoration, every stone, monument and stained glass window was deep cleaned, revealing details that had been hidden for centuries. The cathedral’s rich history, including its surprisingly colorful (to modern eyes) 19th-century restorations, has never looked so magnificent all at once. With the addition of modern lighting and technology, Notre Dame now shines in a way that must be seen to be believed. Take a peek inside with this excellent video:

Plan Now to See Notre Dame in Paris

Even if you’ve visited Notre Dame before, experiencing it after its restoration will be nothing short of extraordinary. With more than 40,000 visitors expected daily, be sure to visit the official cathedral website to secure your spot using their new free reservation system, launching on December 7th, 2024. To mark this historic reopening, an exceptional series of over 50 concerts featuring world-class musicians has been planned. Explore the 2024-2025 Musique Sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris concert season and be sure to book your tickets well in advance to be part of these unforgettable celebrations.
