Hermès

At Paris Perfect, decorating our vacation rentals is more than just design – it’s about creating a timeless, elegant space that reflects the beauty and heritage of Paris. Over the years, we’ve developed a signature design element that has become a much-loved feature in our apartments: framed vintage Hermès scarves. These iconic silk pieces are the perfect blend of artistry, history and luxury, and they’ve become an integral part of the décor in our properties.

What started as a design idea for our Paris Perfect Shared co-ownership properties has grown into something truly special, resonating with guests and design lovers alike. A recent video of Paris Perfect founder Madelyn going on a sourcing trip to find vintage Hermès scarves in Paris has already garnered over a million views (watch it here!), and the response has been overwhelming. So, in this post, we’re sharing more about how we select, frame and incorporate these beautiful scarves into our vacation rentals – and where you can shop for them yourself in Paris!

Hermès scarves like this one at Cairanne are stunning works of art!

Why Hermès Scarves?

There’s a reason Hermès scarves are so iconic. Known for their impeccable craftsmanship, intricate designs and rich history, these scarves have been a fashion staple since the 1930s. But beyond wearing them, we’ve found that they make stunning statement pieces when framed.

Our approach to interior design at Paris Perfect is all about timeless elegance – creating apartments that will stand the test of time, just like these scarves. Each piece we select adds a distinctive touch to our apartments, often becoming the inspiration for an entire room’s color scheme.

Take the Conti co-ownership apartment, for example. The striking black, white and gold design of the scarf hand-picked for this apartment completely shaped the décor. The tassels in the scarf’s pattern inspired the sconces on either side of the fireplace, while the bold black shades were a direct nod to the striking black accents in the design. You can read more about how the scarf patterns influence decorating in many of fractional properties here.

At the Conti, the Hermès scarf inspired the decor.

Finding the Perfect Scarves

Sourcing the perfect vintage Hermès scarves is an art in itself. Madelyn has built relationships with experts in Paris who specialize in authentic, high-quality pieces. Two of our favorite sources include:

  • Véronique at Le Grenier d’Amatxi – Located in Marché Vernaison at the Paris Flea Market, Véronique is a true expert with an encyclopedic knowledge of Hermès designs, artists and history. This is always one of Madelyn’s first stops when searching for scarves.
  • CornerLuxe Bosquet – A centrally located boutique in the 7th arrondissement, just a short walk from many of our Paris vacation rentals. Along with scarves, you’ll find a carefully curated collection of vintage luxury pieces.

The Framing Process

Once we’ve chosen the perfect scarves, the next step is framing them. This is where Isadorure, a specialized framing workshop in the 7th arrondissement, comes in. Isabelle and her team are experts in restoring antique gilded wood and framing artwork to perfection.

One recent update in our framing process is opting to frame scarves without glass. While traditional framing methods include a glass cover, we’ve found that scarves hold their color exceptionally well, and removing the glass prevents glare and keeps the frames lighter. The first apartment where we tried this was Syrah, and we loved the result! A simple feather duster is all that’s needed to keep the fabric clean.

Enjoy a stay at our charming Saumur apartment rental – with our signature Hermès scarf touch!

For a unique twist, our Saumur apartment features a smaller Hermès scarf, so we worked with Isabelle to create a double frame and custom-painted matting to make the piece stand out. It’s now the perfect finishing touch to this beautiful one-bedroom vacation rental on Rue Cler.

Where You Can Spot Hermès Scarves in Our Apartments

We’ve incorporated these beautiful scarves into several of our vacation rentals across Paris and Italy, adding a distinctive and elegant touch to each space. In addition to Saumur, here are just a few of our favorites:

  • La Place Dauphine – Our charming apartments in this historic square were recently updated, and each one now features a stunning Hermès scarf to complement its timeless Parisian décor. Stay tuned to the Paris Perfect blog for a fun look at the scarves we selected for La Place Dauphine!
  • Vivant – When you step inside this co-ownership apartment you’re greeted by the iconic Les Clefs design Hermès created by Caty Latham in 1965. This vintage beauty came from the Paris puces and we love how the elegant keys symbolize a warm welcome to your own Paris apartment. Want to experience it for yourself? Right now there’s a share available of the Vivant. Find out more here!
  • Saint-Pourçain – The scarf in this apartment brings a vibrant pop of color to one of the lovely bedrooms, making it a lively and inviting retreat. It’s the perfect example of how you can use a scarf to not just inspire a room’s design but also add color in a stylish way.

A vintage scarf is the perfect way to add a pop of color like at the Saint-Pourçain vacation rental.

  • Concerto – Our signature Hermès design isn’t just in Paris – you’ll also find it in select Italy Perfect vacation rentals! At the Concerto in Florence, the primary bedroom’s beautiful design was inspired by a sumptuous red and gold vintage Hermès scarf.
  • Maestro – At Maestro, our stunning fractional apartment in Florence, the primary bedroom’s rich gold and deep blue tones were drawn from a beautifully framed Hermès scarf. And bonus – there’s currently a share available! Find out more here about making this remarkable space your home in Florence.

Bringing a Piece of Paris Home

Many guests who stay in our apartments fall in love with the look of framed Hermès scarves and ask where they can shop for their own. If you’re inspired to bring a piece of Paris home with you, we highly recommend visiting Véronique at Le Grenier d’Amatxi or CornerLuxe Bosquet. A framed Hermès scarf makes for a unique and timeless souvenir – one that perfectly captures the essence of Parisian elegance.

If you’re staying in one of our apartments and fall in love with the look, why not bring a piece of Paris home with you? A framed Hermès scarf makes for a unique and timeless souvenir.

travel toiletry shopping guide

Packing your suitcase is one thing, but packing your toiletries? That’s where it often gets tricky. The good news? Madelyn—founder of Paris Perfect and London Perfect—and her sister Lisa—founder of Italy Perfect—have mastered the art of traveling light while still staying polished.

In our previous guides, The Ultimate Travel Shopping Guide – Must-Have Essentials Before Your Next Adventure covered luggage and electronics, while The Perfect Travel Wardrobe – Shop for Your Next Getaway helped you curate a versatile travel wardrobe. Now, it’s time to dive into the essential travel toiletries that will keep you feeling fresh and fabulous throughout your European adventure.

Essential Travel Toiletries

Getting ready on the go doesn’t have to mean overpacking. These carefully chosen toiletries will keep you feeling confident without taking up valuable room in your bag. From space-saving makeup brushes to dual-voltage styling tools, these are Madelyn and Lisa’s favorite travel-ready picks.

Dual Voltage Styling Brush:
Dual Voltage Styling Brush: Most hair styling appliances are not dual voltage. This will work in North America or Europe with a flip of the voltage switch and prong adapter that is included.
Multi-Tasking Makeup Brush
Multi-Tasking Makeup Brush: Save space with a single “brush”—the smaller brushes are screwed inside—that is so convenient Lisa uses it every day even when not traveling. Very good quality and covers all your brushes from eyebrow, eye shadow, sponge and blush!
Water-Activated Face Wipes
Water-Activated Face Wipes: Wash cloths are often not provided in Europe. These don’t dry out like wet wipes. Makeup doesn’t stain towels – plus they’re disposable.
Aquaphor Healing Ointment
Aquaphor Healing Ointment: A classic for a reason! This is especially good during the colder winter months.
Nivea Travel Size
Nivea Travel Size: The Italian staple, this is an all-around lotion that also comes in a convenient travel-size container.
Skratch Labs Hydration Packet
Skratch Labs Hydration Packet: Lisa always travels with these during the hot months when it’s easy to get dehydrated while traveling. The individual packets are so convenient and can just be added to a bottle of water while on the go.
Chewable Toothpaste:
Chewable Toothpaste: A convenient, space-saving alternative to traditional tiny toothpaste tubes and worrying if they’ll last your trip.
Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent Wipes
Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent Wipes: Especially useful if you’re traveling in Italy, these individually wrapped cloths don’t take up space and can also be tucked into your bag for day trips.
Sunscreen Stick
Sunscreen Stick: Compact and mess-free. Lisa always keeps this in her purse for touch-ups when out and about. It goes on sheer. With that famous Tuscan sun, she’s tried all types of sticks and so far this is the best.

Packing for a European adventure is about more than just fitting everything in your suitcase – it’s about choosing the right essentials to ensure comfort, style and ease throughout your journey. Over the years, Madelyn—founder of Paris Perfect and London Perfect—and her sister Lisa—founder of Italy Perfect—have honed the art of packing light and smart through countless trips across Europe. In our guide The Ultimate Travel Shopping Guide – Must-Have Essentials Before Your Next Adventure, we shared their top recommendations for luggage, travel bags and electronics. Plus, we’ve also told you about our Essential Travel Toiletries too. Now, we’re diving deeper into travel fashion, with our curated clothing and accessory picks that will help you look and feel your best from Paris to Tuscany. Let’s get started!

Travel Wardrobe Essentials for Comfort & Style

The key to packing clothing (and not bringing the whole wardrobe!) is versatility. Madelyn and Lisa have mastered the art of packing light while staying stylish, no matter the season or destination. Their secret? Pieces that work across multiple weather conditions and easily transition from day to night. Whether you’re layering for a crisp Parisian morning or dressing up for an evening in Rome, these tried-and-true wardrobe staples ensure you’ll look and feel your best while keeping your suitcase manageable.

Loro Piana Traveler Windmate Storm System Jacket
Loro Piana Traveler Windmate Storm System Jacket: The Maserati of all-weather sporty jackets. Waterproof, wind resistant, cashmere-lined. Lisa scored hers at a deep discount at Loro Piana designer outlet at Tuscany The Mall. Look on The Real Real as they have them at reasonable prices sometimes.
Ilse Jacobsen Rain Jacket
Ilse Jacobsen Rain Jacket: More affordable alternative to the Loro Piana jacket.
Uniqlo Ultralight Down Jacket
Uniqlo Ultralight Down Jacket: For Madelyn, this jacket and the vests are absolute travel essentials. We always keep one in our carry-on bag for summer or winter transatlantic flights due to cold flights & chilly airports. Get the down version not the Puff Tech down alternative.
Uniqlo Pufftech Compact Vest
Uniqlo Pufftech Compact Vest: Lightweight and perfect for layering under a blazer or winter jacket. We keep one rolled up in our handbag or briefcase just in case.
Veronica Beard Jacket
Veronica Beard Jacket: A polished option for evenings out.
Basic Cashmere Crewneck
Cashmere Sweaters: These Basic Cashmere Crewneck and Superfine Cashmere Crewneck sweaters don’t pill, are very soft and are great for layering.
Frugone 1885 Cashmere Scarves
Frugone 1885 Cashmere Scarves: Add elegance and warmth to any outfit. Lisa gets hers from Frugone 1885, her favorite Florence shop for cashmere scarves of the highest quality.
Shawl Wrap
Shawl Wrap: Madelyn loves the versatility of this poncho wrap. It’s great for staying warm on the plane, but is also stylish while traveling.
NYDJ Marilyn Black Pants
NYDJ Marilyn Black Pants: The hardest working piece in any travel wardrobe. Washable, stretchy, and last forever. They also come as Marilyn Jeans and are a must.
NYDJ Pintuck Blouse
NYDJ Pintuck Blouse: Stylish and comfortable staples.
ADAY Travel Shirt:
ADAY Travel Shirt: Versatile, washable, dries quickly. Good for layering or on its own.
ADAY Travel Pants:
ADAY Travel Pants: Pull-on, super comfy, wash and dry quickly.
Lands’ End Drifter Cotton Sweater
Lands’ End Drifter Cotton Sweater: Dress it up or down with a shirt or scarf. It’s the perfect travel basic and comes in many colors and patterns!
Uniqlo Heattech T-Shirts
Uniqlo Heattech T-Shirts: Perfect undershirt for cold weather. Layer under sweaters or use to sleep in. Packs down to nothing.
Uniqlo Heattech Leggings
Uniqlo Heattech Leggings: Layer under pants or jeans during cold weather or use as a pajama alternative.
Munro Comfortable Slip On Shoes
Munro Comfortable Slip On Shoes: Comfortable neutral shoes, slip-on convenient for airports.
Munro Sneakers
Munro Sneakers: Lisa loves traveling with these Munro sneakers in silver and these Munro sneakers in black.
Hoka Shoes
Hoka Shoes: Madelyn travels more casually than Lisa. She loves Hoka’s for comfortable and supportive footwear for all-day exploring.
Powerstep Insoles
Powerstep Insoles: Keep your feet happy, even after miles of walking. For walking 20K+ steps a day in Paris, Rome, Florence, etc., we swear by these. Even better, the Munro shoes have a removable insole so we can use these instead.
Favorite Foldable Umbrella
Favorite Foldable Umbrella: Excellent umbrella, folds really small and lightweight. Philippe has been loyal to this brand for years!

Traveling to Europe is a dream come true, but packing for it? That can be a challenge. Fortunately, Madelyn—the founder of both Paris Perfect and London Perfect—along with her sister Lisa—founder of Italy Perfect—have perfected the art of packing light and smart over decades of European adventures. We’ve shared a glimpse of their tried-and-true shopping and packing tips on Instagram, and now we’re compiling it all into comprehensive guides to help you pack like a pro. From the best suitcases and travel bags to must-have travel electronics, this shopping guide will make your next trip smooth, stylish and stress-free. Let’s get packing!

Packing and On-the-Plane Essentials

Your journey starts the moment you leave for the airport. Having the right luggage and in-flight essentials really sets the tone for a smooth trip. Here are our top shopping recommendations to prepare for your next adventure:

Luggage & Bags

Carry-On

Away Luggage: We’re big fans of the Away luggage brand. They’re lightweight, durable and beautifully designed for seamless travel. We try to travel carry-on only as much as possible, and love their regular hard sided Carry-On, which is fine for short trips and fits in most overhead compartments. Their Bigger-Carry On is big enough for an efficiently packed 3-4 week trip. Be aware that it does not fit in the overhead of budget European airlines like Vueling, EasyJet and RyanAir, so you have to check in. Away suitcases also make excellent gifts if you’re shopping for the travel enthusiasts in your life!

TravelPro Soft-Sided Suitcase Paris travel shopping guide

TravelPro Soft-Sided Suitcase: This is an extremely versatile alternative for travelers who prefer a soft-shell carry-on option. Madelyn likes it because she can easily unzip it and reach into it during the flight and pull out her many snacks! Hard to do with a hard side. Expansion feature is handy too if you’re bringing back some gifts! Also has nice big wheels.

Away Everywhere Bag Paris travel shopping guide

Away Everywhere Bag: Lisa’s go-to laptop bag that has a sleeve that slides over handle of carry-on suitcase. Fits under seat in front of you. In addition to laptop, there’s plenty of space for all the essentials, including cables, headphones, chargers, plug adapters, Uniqlo Ultralight down jacket, inflatable neck pillow, travel slippers and a small ziplock bag with a few toiletries.

Away Packing Cubes travel shopping guide

Away Packing Cubes and Packing Cubes Set: Keep everything organized and maximize luggage space with mesh packing cubes. Great for squishing everything and for staying organized throughout your travels. Makes it so that you don’t even need to unpack, since you can just put the cubes on a shelf or drawer.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Backpack travel shopping guide

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Backpack: Madelyn likes this backpack especially in black (more subtle at check-in if you’re carrying extra stuff)! Lisa used to think they were all the same, but the luggage style opening means you can really organize your carry on. Handy zip pockets for your laptop and for small items. Enough room that, you can even pack emergency toiletries/t-shirts in case your luggage is lost. Nice shape to fit under the seat in front and footrest.

Cincha Travel Belt travel shopping guide

Cincha Travel Belt: Handy to attach your personal bag to your suitcase for hands-free travel.

Big Toiletry Bag

Big Toiletry Bag: Lisa always buys a hanging bag in case counter space limited. Sheer plastic compartments make it easy to find things.

Little Toiletry Bag

Little Toiletry Bag: Choose the right size for your needs. A hanger and see thru pockets is essential. Hanging, packs flat, good for toiletry minimalists. Easy to see and find everything at a glance!

Luggage Tag You Can’t Lose travel shopping guide

Luggage Tag You Can’t Lose: A practical, stylish way to keep tabs on your bag and since they screw on you don’t have to worry about them falling off.

Apple Air Tag

Apple Air Tag: Never lose track of your luggage. So easy to know where your luggage is and to be able to make back up plans if it misses a connection.

Madelyn’s Favorite iPhone Case travel shopping guide

Madelyn’s Favorite iPhone Case: Everyone is always asking Madelyn where she got her iPhone case/wallet. This is the model, and if you have more recent iPhone models, they have the same. What she loves is how much she can cram into the credit card compartments, so much that often she don’t carry a purse anymore while out and about shopping. Credit cards, drivers licenses, even cash. It’s also a safety for traveling as pickpockets can’t remove it. She bought a pretty tortoise style chain in Paris and switches between straps.

On the Plane Comfort

Inflatable Neck Pillow

Inflatable Neck Pillow: Ensure comfort on long flights with an inflatable pillow – a great choice since the memory foam pillows can be bulky.

Memory Foam Travel Pillow

Travel Pillows: This Memory Foam Travel Pillow is adjustable around the neck so it doesn’t slip around. Lisa finds this Travel Pillow very comfortable and how the shape is lower at back so it doesn’t push the head forward and has lots of support on the sides and front.

Sleep Mask

Sleep Mask: Block out distractions and arrive well-rested. Lisa loves these for travel and at home use. This sleep mask has a soft frame around eyes is deep which means no pressure, fits around nose, great blackout.

Ear Plugs

Ear Plugs: There are dozens of silicon ear plugs out there, but none of them work for Lisa as well as these. She only buys wax ear plugs which she can shape to her ears. Truly block out the noise! Yes you have to replace but they’re not expensive and so worth it.

Isotoner Terry Cloth Slippers

Isotoner Terry Cloth Slippers: Lisa’s holy grail of travel slippers. Fit easily into carry on. Her travel tips: “I have a washable cloth bag drawstring to keep them in. I have tried and don’t like the memory foam version, too bulky for carry on or the satin ones, show stains. These have rubber bottoms, which are ideal for wet airplane toilet floors. I wash them & the cloth bag when I return home & put back in carry on for next trip.”

Bluetooth Adapter for the Plane

Bluetooth Adapter for the Plane: If you prefer your own headsets to the ones that barely work on the plane, this is your adapter that hooks up to your ear buds or headphones! Also works at the gym and elsewhere.

Travel Electronics

Staying connected and powered up is essential, but without the key items, it can be one of the biggest modern hassles. Make your travel easier by shopping for these compact and reliable gadgets before your trip:

Universal Plug Adapter

Universal Plug Adapter: Very affordable and compact. Put at least 2 in your carry on bag in case your luggage gets lost. If you travel with a lot of devices, buy one of Madelyn’s favorite power strips below.

Maddy swears by Power Strips: An Absolute Must for Multiple Devices! You arrive in France, Italy, the UK or any country in Europe and … surprise! You cannot charge your phone or your computer with your American plug. You need one of these power strips for your Kindles, iPads, phones, computers, travel hairdryers and more.

3-Outlet and 4-Port USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug

3-Outlet and 4-Port USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug: An adapter plug is NOT a voltage convertor so check that your hair dryer or curling iron are dual voltage. If not, you need to buy a transformer. So I start my favorites list with the all in one: a transformer AND adapter plug for Europe! If you’re not sure whether your portable appliances such as iron, hair dryer, electric curlers/curling iron are dual voltage, then your easiest choice is this. It’s not only a voltage converter, it has 3 regular outlets and 3 USB ports. An easy choice!

8-Outlet and 4-Port USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug

8-Outlet and 4-Port USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug: I love this one because it comes with 8 regular ports and 4 USB ports! PLUS it has adapters for most plugs in the EU including France, Germany, the UK and Ireland.

3-Outlet and USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug travel shopping guide

3-Outlet and USB Travel Power Converter and Multiplug: Very stable on the table with rubber feet that hold it steady Includes adapter plugs so it fits most plugs in the EU including France, Germany and also the UK.

Favorite Power Bank

Favorite Power Bank: Love this to re-charge phones, iPads and more. Skinny, lightweight; best of all 4 cables for charging multiple phones and devices.

Travel Power Bank

Travel Power Bank: Our daughter and friends swear by this, not only for their phones but for their computers as well! so handy to charge when you aren’t near a plug or don’t have the right adapter.

Mini Portable White Noise/Sleep Machine

Mini Portable White Noise/Sleep Machine: Brilliant because it’s small. Perfect if there’s ambient noise; soft nightlight so you can see around the room, USB chargeable, gentle sounds.

Tiny white noise machine

Tiny white noise machine: Great design that is even smaller.

Neck Fan

Neck Fan: Not quite an electronic but just as life saving. Philippe loves it! Growing up in Normandy, he doesn’t do well in hot weather; he swears by it.

Velcro Cable Ties

Velcro Cable Ties: Super for packing electronics cords and keeping everything organized while traveling.

We’re thrilled to announce a special 25th anniversary sale at the Paris Perfect Store! For a limited time, enjoy 25% off luxury linens, decorative pillows and the original artwork of Maurice Fallies, a celebrated Post-Impressionist painter who captured the essence of Paris in the early 20th century. These handpicked pieces were carefully curated by Paris Perfect founder, Madelyn, as a reflection of the beauty and rich history of the City of Light. Now is the perfect opportunity to bring a piece of Paris into your home while celebrating 25 years of Paris Perfect!

The Timeless Art of Maurice Fallies

Maurice Fallies (1883–1965) stands as a unique figure in the Post-Impressionist movement, blending the poetic charm of Impressionism with a modern sensibility. A student of the renowned Hungarian-French painter François Gall, Fallies was deeply inspired by light, atmosphere and the dynamic transformation of Paris during the early-to-mid 20th century.

Maurice Fallies

Fallies’s work captures the beauty of Paris during a time of profound change. His paintings often feature iconic city landmarks juxtaposed with elements of industrial progress, such as cars, trolleys and steam-powered boats on the Seine. One of his most acclaimed pieces, Les Usines à St. Denis, showcases the convergence of traditional Paris with modern infrastructure, balancing strong architectural lines with his signature atmospheric effects.

A Legacy in Art and History

Fallies had a noted talent for documenting industrial change while maintaining artistic beauty that has justly earned him a place in art history alongside greats like Gustave Caillebotte. His work has been studied for its depiction of Paris’s evolution and even resides in notable collections, such as the City of Deuil-La Barre, where his piece Église de Deuil bombardée immortalizes a cathedral bombed during World War II.

Each painting in our collection tells a story of Paris—its landmarks, people and daily life—through Fallies’s masterful brushstrokes. His ability to highlight the intersection of tradition and progress makes his work both timeless and deeply moving.

The enchantment of the Seine captured by Maurice Fallies – Available in the Paris Perfect Store!

We are always on the lookout for the perfect finishing touches for our Paris vacation rentals and fractional co-ownership properties. Whether that’s scouring the flea markets for just the right sized antique mirror or bringing a beautiful chandelier back to life, the décor for our apartments is all carefully selected. Artwork is, of course, a very important final touch! One incredible element we have incorporated into recent projects are original watercolors and paintings by the Parisian Post-Impressionist master Maurice Fallies (1883-1965). We were very fortunate to be able to purchase a collection of his artwork from his descendants and each one tells a unique story of Paris.

Maurice Fallies French post-impressionist paintings

A serene watercolor of Chartres Cathedral by Maurice Fallies.

A wonderful little discovery, Fallies was a recognized painter at the turn of the 20th century and was known for his depictions of Parisian street scenes. He studied under the Hungarian- French painter François Gall (1912-1987) who was noted for his Impressionist style. Greatly influenced by artists like Edgar Degas, Gall’s paintings highlight similar subjects, such as Parisian life, still life and landscapes. Fallies followed closely in style and subject matter with Gall and it’s even said that he didn’t sign some of his own paintings in order to create uncertainty about whether he or Gall had painted the work!

Promenade Sur Le Pont Neuf by Maurice Fallies – Available now from Paris Perfect!

Brilliant at capturing the motion and color of Paris and of an industrializing century, his works hum with the energy of this moment in history. It’s a Paris where the iconic bridges and historic landmarks sit side by side with movement and advancement, like cars, trolleys and little steam powered boats chugging along the Seine next to the Pont Neuf – the oldest bridge in Paris. Some of the most captivating paintings by Fallies are a series of sunsets on the Seine that show the City of Light at one of its most enchanting moments.

We love how his paintings highlight all the varied colors of Paris in every season of the year. In one painting you’ll see the warm tones of autumnal trees against Sacre-Coeur or in another the brilliance of summer with the trees along the Seine leafed out while Parisians and cars bustle across the Pont Neuf. Continuing the traditions of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, Fallies’s paintings depict Parisians and everyday life—like shopping on Rue de la Boulangerie or a stroll through the Jardin de Luxembourg—right alongside iconic landmarks.

Paris Children's Books

We love sharing the joys of Paris with all ages and are always on the lookout for new stories from Paris. One of the latest comes from Oliver Gee and Lina Nordin Gee, the husband and wife duo that have teamed up as author and illustrator to create two fun and endearing Paris children’s books. You may recognize Oliver from his popular podcast, The Earful Tower, and from his Ultimate Guide to the 7th Arrondissement series here on the Paris Perfect Blog. If you have young travelers in your life, they’ll love Kylie the Crocodile in Paris and Roger the Liger in Paris. They are both imbued with Oliver and Lina’s infectious energy and charm!

As the titles reveal, these books are lively tales of animal adventures through the streets and iconic landmarks — along with lesser known sights — around Paris. You’ll also enjoy spotting your favorite places as Kylie and Roger romp through Paris with Lina’s gorgeous illustrations. These are such a fun read – and are perfect for families dreaming of going to Paris or remembering those special moments traveling together.

Paris Children's Books

Now, of course, you might just have some questions. Are there really crocodiles in the Paris canals? What exactly is a liger and what’s he doing in Paris? You can go behind the scenes with Oliver and Lina on this episode of The Earful Tower where they answer many questions about their charming Paris children’s books.

We’ve asked Oliver to share a little more about how the stories and collaboration began with Lina and how did the City of Light inspires their work.

Listeners of your podcast will know about how Kylie and Roger came to be. But for our readers, could you share a little bit about how your Paris Animal World was born?

It all started on a winter’s day several years ago, down by the Canal Saint-Martin. I was interviewing local residents about the canal for my podcast (The Earful Tower) when an elderly lady made a startling confession: She had released baby crocodiles into the water. I had no reason to doubt her. During the Great Paris Lockdown, I started to wonder what might have happened to that crocodile … and so Kylie the Crocodile was imagined, with illustrations by my wife Lina and text by me.

Where do you feel most inspired creatively in Paris?

There’s a stretch along the Seine River, on the Right Bank near the Pont Alexandre III, when you’re walking towards the Tuileries … and it feels like all of Paris is on show along the bending river. Every time I walk there I get this wonderful feeling like there’s nothing wrong in life. I don’t know if that’s where I feel most inspired creatively, but I certainly feel inspired there.

What are some of your favorite spots in the city to explore as a family?

The Jardin du Luxembourg, the banks of the Seine, and the streets of the seventh arrondissement where we live. Rue Cler never disappoints either!

What’s the strangest animal you’ve actually seen in Paris?

I am constantly amazed whenever I see the green parrots that seem to live in the trees of the Champ de Mars. And the enormous catfish I’ve seen pulled out of the Seine boggle my mind.

Do you think you’ll create a book named after your son Otis? If so, do you have any animals in mind already?

I don’t know what animal he would like, but I can tell you that I almost used the name Otis for the owl in our latest book, Roger the Liger. But I went with Oscar instead. If you look closely, you’ll see a discarded cola can on the ground on one page, and it’s called Otis Cola. That might be as close as little Otis gets to featuring in our books … at least for now.

Department stores in Paris are wonderful shopping destinations, and iconic beauty La Samaritaine is a must-visit. Relaunched recently after a major redesign, this elegant emporium now boasts a strikingly modern look to match its inspiring wares.

One of the most beloved department stores in Paris, historic Samaritaine has recently reopened after a stunning redesign commissioned by French luxury goods company LVMH. Japanese architecture studio SANAA’s brilliant renovation includes an undulating glass façade wrapped around part of the heritage buildings. Marrying past and present, restored Art Deco and Art Nouveau details shine alongside contemporary touches.

History of La Samaritaine

La Samaritaine was founded in 1870 by merchant Ernest Cognacq and his wife Marie-Louise Jaÿ (a former saleswoman at Le Bon Marché). Its original buildings, occupying a prime position on the banks of the Seine, were designed by architects Frantz Jourdain and Henri Sauvage. Bold lettering promoted its name, which hailed from an ancient water pump on nearby Pont Neuf bridge featuring a bas-relief of a Samaritan woman pouring water for Christ. Cognacq once sold fabrics on a stall at this spot, although the pump is now long gone. Offering quality, affordable goods, the store proved hugely popular, thanks to innovations such as clearly marked prices and clothes customers could try on before buying. Its slogan “On trouve tout à la Samaritaine” (“One can find everything at Samaritaine”) won over the people’s hearts.

When the old-fashioned store closed in 2005, dismayed locals feared losing this famous 19th-century shopping destination. Luckily, LVMH has restored Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf to its full glory, creating a glam multibrand store for the 21st century.

Design – Bridging Old & New

Architects SANAA united the eclectic complex, spanning Art Nouveau, Art Deco and contemporary buildings, connecting them with two airy, glass-domed courtyards. The site closest to the Seine is a historic monument and has been dazzlingly renovated. A highlight is its rectangular glass roof with an Eiffel-esque iron frame, designed by Frantz Jourdain in 1907, now shown off in style. It crowns a sublime atrium, crisscrossed with staircases and topped with a 115-meter-long, gold-hued peacock mural. Cast-iron signs, ornate pillars, ceramic decorations and enamel tiles were all painstakingly restored.

Numerous artisans worked on the project, from sculptors to painters, gilders and ironmongers. They crafted 16,000 gold leaves to restore the oak railing of the dramatic central stairway. For the wavy façade facing Rue de Rivoli, SANAA produced 343 screen-printed glass panels; this glistening curtain marks the entry to the revamped retail spaces, echoing the shape of neighboring Haussmann-era buildings. Alongside the chic department store there’s a smart hotel, while a new pedestrian plaza offers direct access to Pont Neuf opposite.

Luxury Shopping at La Samaritaine

La Samaritaine’s central location in the first arrondissement commands the Right Bank, a skip from Paris Perfect’s charming vacation apartments at Île de la Cité’s Place Dauphine. Shoppers can enjoy one of the most fabulous department stores in Paris, with around 650 brands displayed over seven levels, embracing luxury labels and exclusive designers. Curated women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, shoes, watches, jewelry and accessories are up for grabs. Retail thrills include continental Europe’s largest beauty space, concept store Loulou for pretty gifts and homewares, a beauty studio and Cinq Mondes spa, personal stylists and private shopping experience L’Appartement with a refined residential setting.

Tempting Dining Options

Appealing to Parisians and international visitors, the reborn Samaritaine by DFS is handy for a bite to eat after exploring nearby attractions such as the Louvre. Foodies will love its 12 tempting restaurants. Bar/restaurant Voyage is the flagship, under the fifth floor’s soaring Art Nouveau glass roof, with Michelin-starred chefs whipping up day-long lunch and dinner menus inspired by celebrity travelers, accompanied by cocktails. Dining options include vegetarian, organic dishes at Source by Joie; caviar baguettes at Street Caviar by La Maison Prunier; healthy local Parisienne by Petit Plisson; upscale gastronomy at Dinette by Dalloyau; and breakfast bakery-to-brasserie Ernest by Naoëlle d’Hainaut and Eric Kayser, which serves wine and tapas until late. Refuel with a coffee at roastery Zinc by Brûlerie des Gobelins, a pastry at Pâtisserie l’Exclusive by Dalloyau or dainty treats at Sweet Corner by Bogato.

Culture

Exciting pop-ups, collaborations, exhibitions and events animate the store. Cultural guided tours also bring Samaritaine’s history to life. For insights into the family behind the brand and 18th century Parisian style, visit Musée Cognacq-Jay in the Marais’s Hôtel Donon (8 rue Elzévir, 75003), which showcases the couple’s personal collection of art, furniture and accessories. For more iconic shopping experiences, see our earlier post for more on Les Grands Magasins department stores in Paris. You can catch lovely views of Samaritaine from Pont Neuf and stroll there easily from our luxury vacation apartment rentals at La Place Dauphine.

Jewelry Hunting in Paris: 8 Designers to Discover Now https://www.parisperfect.com/blog/2021/04/paris-jewelry-shopping/ https://www.parisperfect.com/blog/2021/04/paris-jewelry-shopping/#comments Wed, 21 Apr 2021 13:22:03 +0000 https://www.parisperfect.com/blog/?p=27686 While we're all dreaming of those beautiful shopping strolls through the streets of Paris, here are some of our favorite jewelry designers in Paris to get you dreaming. It may not be quite the same, but you can still let your imagination wander!

Monsieur Paris Jewelry Boutique in Paris

One of the great joys of Paris is the art of flanerie, that great long stroll to nowhere in particular that reveals the hidden corners of the city. During such meandering, you may find yourself on a picturesque boulevard or an impossibly romantic alleyway. In one of these tucked away corners of Paris, you’ll inevitably find your way into an atelier, an artist’s workshop, with someone hard at work on a unique something-or-other, lost in concentration amongst the bustle of everyday life. They might not even notice you’ve entered and when they do you may only get the requisite “bonjour” that every shopkeeper offers as you’re left to browse in silence. Then you’ll find that one piece, whether it is a whimsical scarf, the perfect pair of sunglasses or an impossibly beautiful necklace, and you’ll know you just have to have it. When you return from your trip that piece you picked up will become a permanent part of your wardrobe and whenever you wear it people will ask where you found it. “Oh, this?” You’ll ask, feigning surprise that they’ve noticed. “I found it in this great little out-of-the-way shop in Paris. You won’t need to say anything more.

Of course, for the moment those broad boulevards and hidden alleyways that make Paris so magical are out of reach, but it doesn’t mean that you have to stop searching for those little treasures. Thanks to the expansion of e-commerce and the ever-increasing use of social media to creatively promote both large and small producers, a whole range of artisans from Paris can deliver custom-made pieces around the world to suit anyone’s taste. Jewelry is one of the most accessible products to buy online: you can view the designer’s entire catalog and work with them to design custom pieces or size them accordingly. Thanks to the magic of the internet, there is a wealth of up-and-coming craftspeople to discover as well as the classic names that make Paris the world’s greatest shopping adventure. Plus, as so many shops have been forced to close their in-person stores for the past year, online purchases are a perfect way to continue to support small business owners.

While it’s impossible to include every jewelry designer or shop in Paris, the following list should be enough to get you dreaming. It may not be quite the same, but you can still wander!

A post shared by Maison Mellerio (@melleriojoaillier)

Maison Mellerio

If Paris is a jewelry lover’s paradise then Place Vendôme and rue de la Paix are an oasis in the very center. This area is home to many incredible designers and here you’ll find the jewelry designer that claims to be the oldest in the world, Mason Mellerio dits Meller or simply, Mellerio. Founded in 1613, the shop has been in residence at 9 rue de la Paix in the heart of the jewelry district since 1815 and boasts the patronage of royals including Marie de Medici, Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette. Their online store allows you to peruse their shop, size out engagement rings and explore the “high jewelry” collection. Price tags run into the stratospheric, but it’s not hard to understand why Mellerio has stood for hundreds of years as the point of reference for fine French jewelry. Keep it on your list for the next visit to Paris and, until then, dreaming is free!

Beautiful handmade jewelry from Monsieur Paris (Photos courtesy Monsieur Paris)

Monsieur Paris

The Marais is dream spot for a stroll to discover hidden treasures, and there are few places finer to do so than Monsieur Paris, not least because the Monsieur in question is the diminutive Nadia Azoug. Her large eyes and curious gaze may bring Amelie Poulain to mind but she, and her craft, are much more than this. Inspired by her Kabyle roots from North Africa and her desire to create a range of jewelry that could stand alongside the classic houses in the Marais while still being attainable for artists like herself, Monsieur Paris is a collection that really does have something for everyone. There are playful pendants, delicate rings and bracelets and classic earrings that will easily become your everyday studs. Everything is made from ethical 18k gold and recycled silver, and the workshop, jewelers and artisans are all located within one kilometer of each other in the city.

Nathalie Lacroix

If you’ve ever dreamed of touring Paris with an expert and getting the inside scoop on the brands you wish you’d heard of, then consider Nathalie Lacroix your new best (virtual) friend. With over 25 years of experience in the luxury brand sector, Lacroix transitioned into the role of curator in 2017 and uses her considerable talents to source and promote new brands in fashion. Her roster includes a wide range of artisanal jewelry makers, many of whom work with sustainable materials and abide by ethical practices. Spend a few hours on her website or Instagram page and get to know Parisian artists such as Caraiva, Héloïse & Abélard and De la Forge, all of whom have online shops available. While in Paris, be sure to visit her boutique at 45 rue de Sèvres in the 6th arrondissement near Le Bon Marché.

Celine Daoust Boutique in Paris

Celine Daoust

Some jewelry becomes our favorites because of the stories that they tell, and behind every piece that Celine Daoust creates there is a tale to tell. Based in her native Paris, she is known for the mix of colorful stones that she sources from Jaipur, India with various types and cuts of diamonds. Her website is not only a feast for the eyes but an education about the different forms and shades in which diamonds can appear, and her true talent is in bringing the beauty of a rough-cut stone to life. If you’re looking for something that you’ll treasure for what goes into it as much as what it looks like, look no further.

Messika

If you haven’t heard of Messika by name, you’ve very likely seen their designs adorning some of the most famous women in the world. A favorite of Beyoncé and Kate Moss, Messika began in Paris in 2005 under the tutelage of Valére Messika, whose father André is known as one of the city’s preeminent diamond merchants. Her first success came with the “Skinny” line, a series of thin, flexible designs that proved to change the way that statement pieces could be made. The flagship boutique on rue Saint-Honoré in Paris is a soothing combo of neutral tones and supremely luxurious finishes, but if you can’t get there right away the online store does a fine job of immersing you in the brand.

Florence Pavec

Some people are simply born to be artists, whatever form their expression may take, and Florence Pavec is undoubtedly one of these people. A native of Paris who studied at L’Ecole di Louvre while also studying jurisprudence, Pavec’s designs reflect the colors and contours of impressionism and expressionism using a combination of stones and metals that marry beautifully under her trained eye. Each of her pieces is unique and evokes the summery tableaux that she has so expertly appraised in her career as an art historian. You can browse and purchase directly via her Instagram page, which is itself an art lover’s dream. We may not yet be back at the Louvre, but we can always visit Florence Pavec.

4 Crosses

Know how sometimes French women have that effortless, I-woke-up-like-this charm that manages to pull together their entire look? That mysterious alchemy is part of 4 Crosses, the handmade jewelry collection from Parisian artist Sophie Vallois Gouard. The pieces are all unique and designed by Gouard in her atelier, and each one reflects both the timeless style of women like Jackie Kennedy (one of her inspirations) along with the well-loved feeling of a piece handed down from generation to generation. 4 Crosses have the kind of pieces that get more interesting the more you look at them, which means you may well want to dedicate a day to online shopping.

Repossi

The House of Repossi is originally from Turin in Northern Italy but has called Place Vendôme in Paris home since the 1980s, where it has become one of the most iconic modern jewelry brands in the world. The earliest Repossi designs in the 1940s reflected the artistic turn towards the avant-garde, with geometric patterns and bold colors that were characteristic of the period. In the decades that have followed that ultra-sleek and perennially cool sensibility remains, updated for a new audience by Gaia Repossi, who took over as creative director to become one of the most influential people in the fashion world. Their online boutique is full of those pieces that define Paris chic, and its minimalist aesthetic will remind you of just how special the city is.
