Ireland is bracing for some 'intense' stormy weather with heavy rain and winds on the way.

An expert has said that the latest weather models are now showing intense rain and strong gusts on Sunday night into Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has issued a weather advisory for the whole of Ireland from 11pm on Sunday to 1pm on Monday.

The national forecaster warned of heavy downpours and and very windy weather overnight on Sunday with the possibility of localised flooding, poor road conditions, and fallen trees and branches.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "There is potential for a spell of wet and very windy weather over Ireland on Sunday night and for a time on Monday as a deepening depression tracks over the country."

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said that the 'intense' weather for tomorrow night seems to have "sneaked up" on some weather models.

He wrote: "Latest weather models are a little concerning for that potential low system tomorrow night that I had mentioned with some models really developing it now and bringing intense rain and strong gusts overnight into Monday morning. This one seems to have sneaked up on some models!

"Total rainfall forecasts are not consistent across the models with this feature but some showing over 40mm in a short space of time so flooding risk possible too."
