Storm Debi has made landfall and is currently tracking north-eastwards across Ireland.

Met Eireann has issued several weather warnings, including a rare Status Red alert.

It’s warning of “severe and damaging wind gusts leading to some disruption” as well as heavy rain with the possibility of flooding.

Eight counties are under a Status Red alert until 9am, while 19 are affected by a Status Orange warning until 10am. A separate Status Yellow alert is in place for the entire country until 3pm.

There were 100,000 properties without power this morning as well as 'severe' disruption to public transport. Power is estimated to be restored by 6pm on Monday evening in most areas impacted.

Schools and preschools in counties affected by Met Eireann's Status Red and Orange warnings are set to remain closed until at least 10am due to the expected impact of the storm.

The national forecaster said: “Stormy in many areas this morning as Storm Debi continues to track northeastwards over the country. Severe and damaging wind gusts are expected leading to some disruption. Heavy rain will become confined to Ulster during the morning with sunny spells and showers following to other areas. A continued possibility of flooding in the west and north. Maximum temperatures of 10C to 13C with strong to gale force west or southwest winds, decreasing fresh later in the day.

“Clear spells and showers on Monday night, the showers heaviest and most frequent across the southwest and west of the country. Lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C in fresh southwest winds.”

It reads: “Extremely gusty on Sunday night and early Monday due to Storm Debi with potential danger to life. Possible impacts: - Damage to exposed and vulnerable structures - Disruption to services and transport - Significant power outages - Fallen trees/branches”

10am - Status Orange Wind warning for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Roscommon until 10am.

It reads: “Unusually stormy on Sunday night and Monday due to Storm Debi with severe and damaging gusts. Possible impacts: - Damage to exposed and vulnerable structures - Dangerous travelling conditions - Disruption to services - Damage to power lines - Fallen trees/branches”

3pm - Status Yellow Wind and Rain warning for all of Ireland until 3pm.

It reads:”Very windy or stormy on Sunday night and Monday due to Storm Debi, accompanied by heavy rain with a chance of embedded thunderstorms and hail. Possible impacts: - Fallen trees/branches - Localised flooding including wave overtopping - Hazardous travelling conditions”
