Most parts of the country are set to enjoy a rare glimpse of sunshine this morning before clouds move in from the west this afternoon ahead of another wet and windy night.

Met Éireann is forecasting a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers for the early part of Tuesday with cloud building from the southwest later in the day. Rain and drizzle will develop across much of Munster and Connacht this evening.

Temperatures will reach a high of between nine and 12 degrees with a light to moderate westerly wind, becoming southerly and freshening in the west through this evening.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather is predicting “good sunny spells” this morning and “just the odd shower” before a spell of wet and windy weather moves in tonight.

This will clear by Wednesday morning, making way for more sunny spells and showers, with more than 20mm of rain possible in parts of the west.

The national forecaster has warned of the possibility of frost and ice later in the week, with temperatures plunging to between minus one and plus one degrees on Friday night.

Those chilly conditions will make way for the sunniest spell of the week on Saturday, however, with temperatures reaching between seven and 10 degrees with a light easterly breeze.

Enjoy it while it lasts though, as the weather will turn more unsettled for the remainder of the weekend and into next week with further spells of rain and showers.

Here’s how the forecast is looking for the days ahead:

Wednesday

Rain will clear from Ulster and Leinster in the morning with sunny spells and scattered blustery showers following. Highest temperatures of seven to 12 degrees in a moderate to fresh and gusty west to southwest wind.

Clear spells and scattered showers will continue with the driest conditions towards the east during Wednesday night. Lowest temperatures of three to 5 degrees in a light to moderate southwesterly wind, freshening along western and southern coasts.

Thursday

Another day of sunshine and scattered blustery showers, with more persistent rain moving across the country through the afternoon and evening followed by scattered showers. Feeling cool with highest temperatures of seven to 10 degrees, in a moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly wind.

Thursday night will see lingering rain in parts of the north and east will clear early on with further showers and clear spells developing. Lowest temperatures of three to six degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds, veering northwest later.

Friday

Cool and bright with sunshine and scattered showers, mainly affecting the northern half of the country. Highest temperatures of eight to 12 degrees in a light to moderate northwesterly wind.

Friday night will be cold with frost and ice possible in lowest temperatures of chilly minus one to plus one degrees. Showers will continue in parts of the north for a time before becoming mostly dry later in the night with just light winds.

Saturday

Remaining mostly dry with clear sunny spells and the chance of an odd shower. Highest temperatures of seven to 10 degrees in a light easterly breeze.
