Holidaymakers have been warned before they jet off to any Spanish hotspots that a few popular beaches in Spain's Costa del Sol will be closed for a few months this summer.

Both the Torrebermeja and Las Gaviotas beaches have been partially closed off since March as a result of ongoing improvement works on the Malapesquera breakwater, Mirror reports.

The beaches will fully reopen in July at the earliest, authorities in Benalmádena said.

However, even though tourists will not have access to the sand or sea, bars and restaurants in the area will still be open.

There is some good news though. The beaches are only closed during the week and will be open during the weekend, meaning that holiday goers can still get a bit of sand in at some point.

Local councillor Encarnación Cortés, who is in charge of the beaches, said the Torrebermeja and Las Gaviotas beaches will be accessible to the public from Friday at noon when the trucks cease their activity, adding that the improvement works are expected to be ongoing until at least July 1.

She said: "We have also agreed with the company to open the affected beaches to the public during the weekends, from Friday at noon, when the trucks cease their activity, and we will condition the sand as quickly as possible for the arrival of the users.

“During the next few weeks, these beaches will not give tourists the good image they are used to, but it is a work that has been in demand by the beach sector for many years: the expansion of the dam will undoubtedly benefit the stabilization of this strip of the Benalmádena coastline.

"Next summer we will begin to experience the positive consequences of this action, and the affected beach entrepreneurs have received the news of the imminent start of the works with satisfaction, even though they are aware that they will be affected during its execution."
