Met Eireann has given an update on the possibility of cold weather engulfing Ireland within days.
Long-range weather maps, which are subject to change, show a trend towards cooler temperatures later this week.
In an update today, Ireland’s national forecaster said that while there is currently “lots of uncertainty”, there is a “possibility of colder weather” this weekend.
It said: “At present there is lots of uncertainty in the forecast for the weekend with the possibility of colder weather extending south over the country.”

It comes as temperatures are forecast to drop to freezing overnight, with frost in places.
The forecast for tonight reads: “Cold tonight with showers dying out and long clear spells developing. Patches of mist may form as northwest breezes fall light over land. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C with patchy frost in places.”
After an unsettled November so far, there is some good weather news for the coming days as the meteorological agency said “there will be lots of dry weather during the week”. However, it added that there will also be “plenty of cloud and some patchy rain in Atlantic coastal counties at times”.
Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, Met Eireann’s forecast says: “A cold and dry start on Tuesday with any frost clearing during the morning with spells of hazy sunshine developing. Holding dry for the remainder of the day but with increasing amounts of cloud. Highest temperatures of 8C to 11C. Light northwest or variable breezes will back southwest by evening time.
“Mostly cloudy on Tuesday night with patchy light rain or drizzle developing in western and northwestern coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 8C, occurring early in the night. Southwest breezes will increase moderate to fresh in strength on Atlantic coasts.
“A generally cloudy day on Wednesday with patchy ran or drizzle affecting Atlantic coastal areas at times. However, elsewhere it is expected to be mostly dry with a few sunny interludes likely in the east. A fairly mild day with highest temperatures of 10C to 13C in a moderate southwest breeze, fresh along the Atlantic seaboard.
“Mild and cloudy on Wednesday night with scattered patches of drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 9C to 12C in moderate to fresh westerly breezes.
“Another predominantly cloudy day on Thursday with patchy rain or drizzle affecting coastal counties of the west and north at times. Elsewhere across the country, there will be lots of dry weather albeit with a good deal of cloud and only limited bright spells. Maximum temperatures of 10C to 13C in a moderate westerly breeze.
“On Thursday night, it looks set to be mostly cloudy with a few patches of rain or drizzle about and the chance of more persistent rain in Ulster for a time. Minimum temperatures of 7C to 10C in a moderate northwest breeze.
“Patchy rain is expected to clear south over Ireland on Friday and it will turn somewhat colder in the north. Highest temperatures of 7C to 12C, mildest in the south.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, it continued: “At present there is lots of uncertainty in the forecast for the weekend with the possibility of colder weather extending south over the country.”
