Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet's sweet video call to their grandfather has marked a “turning point” for King Charles in his ongoing feud with Prince Harry.
The monarch recently celebrated his 75th birthday, and it was reported that his youngest son, the Duke of Sussex, would be skipping the intimate family party in London. However, a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan issued a fiery response, and slammed reports by claiming that the 39-year-old was never invited.
It later emerged that Harry would be calling his father from California to wish him happy birthday, and it has been reported that the monarch spoke to two of his beloved grandchildren, Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2, for the first time in six months. It was also revealed that Meghan and Harry showed Charles a video of his two children singing Happy Birthday to him, and the sweet moment was a “turning point” for the monarch.
Charles and Harry had cut contact following the release of his explosive memoir Spare earlier this year, but after the Duke offered an olive branch to his father, many are hopeful that the pair will repair their fractured relationship - including the King himself.
“He was really quite taken by it. Relations between the King and his son are still very strained, but he would never let that get in the way of having a relationship with his grandchildren, who he hasn’t seen for a very long time,” a source told OK!
Following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September last year, Charles is reportedly reflecting on his life after his ascension to the throne, and wants to prioritise family, and that means making amends with his estranged youngest son.
“Charles knows he doesn’t have many more birthdays or Christmases left and wants to try and repair the rift so that his grandchildren will be a part of the family like everyone else,” the source added.
The Sussexes are planning on spending some time in the UK over the festive season, but that has reportedly caused problems with Harry’s big brother, Prince William. It was claimed that Harry and Meghan had been “shunned” by the Royal Family and will not be invited, and William isn’t upset over not seeing his brother at Christmas.
“I don’t think William will be shedding a tear over this. Deep down, I’m sure he still loves Harry, but I don’t think he can see a way out of the rift that has opened between them,” former royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Sun.
