Ryan Tubridy has announced his next "big job" as he returns to the Galway town he took shelter in after the RTE payments scandal.

The ex-RTE star announced he will turn on the Christmas lights in Clifden, Co Galway later this month – on the same night as Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty makes his debut on the toy show.

The broadcaster called the locality his "favourite town" as he shared the details of the event.

He said: "Big job to do in a few weeks time as the good people of Clifden, Co. Galway have invited me to switch on their Christmas lights on Friday November 24th at 6pm," he said.

"I’m honoured! Any excuse to get back to my favourite town.

"Up to the attic now to dig out a jumper!" he added as he poked fun at the 14 years he presented the coveted toy show.

Ryan retreated to Clifden earlier this summer. His cousin runs The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel.

The former Late Late Show presenter previously told RSVP Magazine: "The Abbeyglen in Galway is run by cousins of mine. It is a hotel that has soul, it has a sense of fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

"I love a night of piano, pints and messing. And there is a parrot at reception, what is not to love?"

Eating in the area is also a favourite of his and Tubridy said he simply loves wholesome Irish food with a bit of craic.

Ryan said: "There are very few things that beat the Irish stew in Mitchell’s in Clifden, Co Galway. Lamb stew with loads of potatoes... I think about it a lot."

It comes just days after Tubridy stepped out with rumoured girlfriend and former Rose of Tralee contestant, Dr Clare Kambamettu.

The clinical psychologist and the presenter arrived together at the Irish Post Awards in London last week.

Tubridy could be set to start the New Year in a new city as it is rumoured he is set to take up a job on Virgin Radio UK.

Tubridy had to present an award to Nadine Coyle for her outstanding contribution to music – but the presenter joked that it was "nice to be back" as he arrived on stage.

Speaking on stage to host Eamonn Holmes, Ryan said: "What a pleasure it is to be here this evening. It has been a while since I’ve been in front of a microphone, but it is nice to be back."

Eamonn asked if we were "going to see more of you over here" to the former Late Late Show host but Ryan dodged the question by saying: "Say that again? Say that again?"

But Ryan added: "Put it this way, if anyone needs a housemate, I’ll bring a bag of cans."

Eamonn quipped: "You’ll be very welcome; we’ll look after you."
