And Reds boss Duff said: “The foundation of our team over the past two seasons has been our defence and Sean is another great addition.

“He has an incredible CV but most importantly he has top quality that he will bring to the team. I’m very excited to see him play for this great club.”

Gannon was down the pecking order at Rovers this year but is raring to go with his new club.

He said: “I’m from Ringsend so I know what this club means to people. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to come to in my career. I’m excited to bring my experience to the team.

“Damien’s vision for the next few years is really exciting and I’m delighted to be part of it. Shels is an ambitious club.”

Keith Ward

And Duff feels Ward, 33, is another seasoned campaigner who can make an impact next season.

“I’ve always been very impressed by Keith when we’ve played against him over the past two years,” he added.

“He has incredible technical ability, an infectious enthusiasm and a brilliant winning mentality that will be priceless for our dressing room.”

Shels have also tied centre-back Paddy Barrett to a new contract that runs until the end of next season.

Elsewhere, FAI Cup winners St Patrick’s Athletic have signed forward Cian Kavanagh from Derry City.

The 20-year-old is a former Saints academy player and also played at Hearts when Daly was their assistant manager.

"I'm delighted to get Cian in,” said Daly. “It's an area of the pitch we're looking to strengthen.

“We lost Eoin Doyle (to retirement) towards the end of last season and Conor Carty has returned to Bolton after his loan, so we're very happy to add Cian.”
