Thinking about jetting off on a holiday to Spain? The stunning Mediterranean sunspot is one of the most popular destinations for Irish holidaygoers, with thousands of people heading each year to its sunny beaches.
Most Irish people tend to head to Spain’s popular Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca areas, with the Canary Islands being popular in the winter due to being warm all year round.
New stats from Execltur show that Spanish tourists might be heading away from Spain’s southern hotspots.

In 2023 there was a 9.5 per cent fall in Spanish visitors to hotels in the Costa del Sol, this is in comparison to an explosion of tourists in the north, in areas like the Basque Country and Galician region, Express reports.
Some experts have put forward that this might be the result of climate change causing heatwaves in southern Spain as the north of the country is normally a great deal cooler in the summer.
While Galicia might not be the most known region for Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain, the region is one the country’s most stunning with some of the most beautiful beaches. The Port city of Vigo was named recently as a top trending destination by Skyscanner.
One of the top-rated destinations in Galicia on Tripadvisor are the stunning Cies Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Pontevedra.
One holidaymaker wrote on Tripadvisor: “Wonderful experience. The Islas Cies are really a paradise and you must definitely go there at least once in your life!”
Another avid traveller posted: “A pearl in the Atlantic. I really enjoyed Cies. Nice trails with amazing viewpoints. Even in the higher season, it didn’t feel packed at all.”
Many tourists like to visit the region so they can undergo the Camino de Santiago, a famous and historic pilgrimage route that ends in the city of Santiago de Compostela.
The cathedral located in the city is at the endpoint of the pilgrimage, even for tourists who didn’t do the pilgrimage route. Another visitor wrote: “Stunning architecture.”
