Every day, Tommy Bowe travels from Belfast to Dublin to film Ireland AM.

But the commute doesn't bother him, and after a quick afternoon nap, he is usually full of energy and able to enjoy the rest of the day with his wife Lucy and their kids, Emma and Jamie.

It's a hectic day, but one that he is well used to having hosted the morning show for the past three years.

Tommy told RSVP Live: "My alarm generally goes off after 4am. I go into studio, do my prep and get my make-up done.

"The make-up is taking a lot more time now thanks to these early starts [laughs].

"I live for a nap. A nap is so important when you do morning telly, even if it is just for 20 minutes or 40 minutes. That is more than enough to recharge the batteries.

"I don’t mind it and I stay with my brother in Dublin a few nights a week as well. It works for me. When I am home I can pick up the kids from school and I am free all afternoon to get stuff done."

Tommy has been on Ireland AM for three years now, taking over from Ciara Doherty, who moved to The Tonight Show.

He said: "I’m still struggling with autocue [laughs]. Ireland AM produces live content and it is an important show.

"We are the first show that is on in people’s mornings and we try to set the agenda for the day while putting a smile on their faces.

"The show fits me perfectly because I don’t take myself too seriously. We try to be serious at times, but we also have a bit of craic together as well!"

Would he ever move to Dublin full time? "Moving to Dublin would make things a lot easier, but who knows what’s going to happen down the line?

"We’re happy where we are at the moment, my kids are happy and my wife is happy. As they say, happy wife, happy life!"

Tommy began Ireland AM working with Karen Koster and now he is working with Muireann O’Connell and Alan Hughes.

He said: "I’m like the naughty brother, Muireann is like the sister who keeps us all in-check and Alan is meant to be the respectable one, but he is bolder than any of us.

"We have a great mix; we’re all very different so we bring our own opinions on things.

"We’re like a lot of families at home, there are always family arguments, but there is nothing like that bond that pulls a family together."

Tommy has suffered some gaffs on Ireland AM over the years, but he always just own them because that is the type of person he is.

He said: "I make mistakes on the show every day. I never go out there and try to offend people with what I do or say, I just try to have a bit of fun. We all make mistakes and you can’t take yourself too seriously."

Ireland had another big year at the Rugby World Cup, beating the eventual champions South Africa in the group stages before losing to the All-Blacks. Tommy remembers sharing a team when he played.

He said: "I shared with Rob Kearney for a bit, Donncha O’Callaghan and Andrew Trimble was one of my main roomies. I liked to mix it up to keep things fresh."

Donners was a complete messer when overseas.

He added: "He was a disaster, honestly! I had no room for my toothbrush or toothpaste with all his fake tan bottles [jokes]."
