A Status Yellow weather warning has been issued for two counties in the south-west of Ireland as heavy rain is set to batter both Cork and Kerry for the next 24 hours or so.

Met Eireann has confirmed that a Status Yellow rain warning will come into effect for Cork and Kerry at midday on Friday and will remain valid until midday on Saturday.

The national forecaster anticipates "rain with heavy falls at times combined with already saturated ground" over the 24-hour period.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, a UK Met Office rain warning has also been issued for Co Down, though this warning does not come into effect until 9pm on Friday evening, and it will expire overnight, at 3am on Saturday morning.

Most areas of the country will experience rain and windy conditions at some stage over the next 24 hours, while temperatures will hover around 10C.

"Largely dry with sunny spells, slowly turning hazy later this morning," a Met Eireann spokesperson said of Friday.

"Rain will develop in the southwest by midday and spread northeastwards to all areas this afternoon and will continue this evening. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C with light south to southeast winds strengthening.

"Rain in all areas early tonight. It will clear eastwards later in the night with scattered showers following into western counties. Fresh to strong south to southeast winds will becoming south to southwesterly and ease as rain clears. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 8C early tonight before gradually rising overnight to around 9C to 13C.

"Saturday will be breezy with bright or sunny spells and widespread showers, some heavy or prolonged with hail and with isolated thunderstorms possible. Highest temperatures of 12C to 14C with fresh, gusty southwest winds."
