The funeral of a mum of five killed in a hit and run in a Dublin suburb last week is to take place on Friday.

Kathleen Furlong, aged in her 80s, died after being struck by a car shortly before 11am on Friday, September 8, at the junction of Fortunestown Way and Cheeverstown Road in Tallaght, Dublin 24.

The driver failed to remain at the scene and fled the area.

However, a third party subsequently made contact with gardaí and informed investigators where the car involved could be located.

A man was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident and appeared before Tallaght District Court on Monday, September 11, 2023.

Kathleen’s heartbroken family has now announced details of their ‘loving mum’s’ funeral on RIP.ie.

A notice on the website reads: “Kathleen Furlong (née Eccles) is predeceased by her late husband Leo and survived by her children Lorraine, Peter, Philip, Paul and Joanne.

“Beloved wife of the late Leo and loving mum to Lorraine, Peter, Philip, Paul and Joanne. Sadly missed by her heartbroken family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, brothers, sisters, extended family, neighbours, friends and Molly.”

Kathleen’s removal will take place on Friday, September 15 to St Mark’s Church, Springfield for 11.30am Funeral Mass and afterwards to Mt Jerome Crematorium.

Meanwhile, tributes have been pouring in for the mum-of-five online sharing memories and offering their condolences to her family.

One friend wrote: “Heartbreaking news of Kathleen’s death. Such fond memories of our wonderful time when she lived in London,” while another wrote: “My deepest and sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to everyone. No words can ever describe these difficult times. I always remember seeing Leo and Kathleen at the piano singing, they were the life and soul of the party. I imagine they are doing it again now.”

Another friend wrote: “Fond happy memories flood into my mind. She was one of a kind, always smiling, always had a way of making us laugh, always a twinkle in her eye. Such a beautiful soul. Rest in peace Kathleen. Keep on shining.”
